We bought this for our 2 year old at the insistence of my mother-in-law. I think it's such a cute little story, but I find it hard to read to my daughter. The story is in the pictures, and I don't think she quite comprehends what's going on (and all that is said aloud is "Hug"). This might be for older kids, or maybe I'm just approaching the story wrong. I still love the story, which is why i rated it 4 stars, but for those parents that are looking for something to "read" to your kids instead of just look through, you might want to look elsewhere.

Our three year old daughter really likes this book. She already owns "Goodnight Gorilla", which is another preschool book I would highly recommend, so she was not thrown off by a book with very few words. It is a nice change in reading in that you have to study the faces of the animals and look at their body language to get the full story.

Easy reading. Great for newborn to beginning readers. LOVE this book. I've purchased it 3 times (twice for a gift and once for my home). In our top 3 favorites. Even my hubby doesn't mind this book because it's short and easy.

My 22 month old loves this little book. Although there are minimal words, she loves to flip through the pages and seems to understand who the baby is and who momma is. She points often and says momma and hug.

Great little book about a monkey in search of a hug from his mommy. The story only uses three words (hug, Bobo, and Mommy) and relies on some fantastic illustrations to depict the rest. Very well done - a popular bedtime book in my house.

The only words in this book is "hug, mommy, and Bobo" we add a little story line in because saying "hug? , hug! , HUG" gets a little old. For some reason my son loves his book. He is 18 mo old.

One of my very favorite kids books! Yes it's super simple, but that makes it open for discussion and interpretation. Every time Bobo says 'hug' he means so much more. I love talking about how much he loves and misses his mommy, how the nice animals are concerned and want to help, and how we should love each other even if we're different. And the last page is a great reminder to hold mom's hand so you don't get lost. And the added bonus? My kid LOVES it!

So the only word is 'hug' and when reading to a toddler you really have to dig deep and find different voices and how to read this book with excitement and question so that the toddler gets excited about it... If not the. You are just repeating the word hug repetitively with no emotion and the child will get bored. But the pictures are gorgeous and help provide other talking points with your child to engage them

About the Author

W. Jean Dodds received her D.V.M. in 1964 from the Ontario Veterinary College. From 1965 to 1986 she worked for the New York State Health Department in Albany, where she conducted comparative studies of animals with inherited and acquired bleeding diseases. She also was a member of many national and international committees on hematology, animal models of human disease, veterinary medicine, and laboratory animal science. Dodds was a grantee of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NIH) and has over 150 research publications. She was formerly President of the Scientist’s Center for Animal Welfare; Chairman of the Committee of Veterinary Medical Sciences; and Vice-Chairman of the Institute of Laboratory Animal Resources, National Academy of Sciences. In 1974, Dodds was selected as Outstanding Woman Veterinarian of the Year by the AVMA, Denver, Colorado; in 1977, she received the Region I Award for Outstanding Service to the Veterinary Profession from the American Animal Hospital Association, Cherry Hill, New Jersey; Dodds received the Gaines Fido Award as Dogdom’s Woman of the Year in 1978 and 1990; and the Award of Merit in 1978 in Recognition of Special Contributions to the Veterinary Profession from the American Hospital Association, Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1984 she was awarded the Centennial Medal from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine.Dodds moved to Southern California in 1986 to establish Hemopet, the first nonprofit national blood bank program for animals. In 1987 she was elected a distinguished Practitioner of the National Academy of Practice in Veterinary Medicine. Currently, Dodds is actively expanding Hemopet’s full-service, nonprofit animal blood bank program, which provides canine blood components, blood bank supplies, and related services throughout North America. I admit this is a book I have read multiple times. It is a book I have a strong affinity for. I come back to it every few years. Why? Norbert's views of the future were prescient of our times. He does a fine job of hi-lighting the dangers of a "machine à gouverner" and the implications thereof. In essence he describes what can happen if you were able to apply probabilistic control to humans and tie this back to feedback systems.The book is wide ranging in its scope of thought and for that reason and more highly recommended.

Beautiful book from the 50's that is still relevant today. I was recommended this book from an AI professor at the University of Texas' Comupter Science program, and I couldn't be more grateful.

The accuracy of the predictions about the future is impressing, given that they are more than 50 years old. My impression is that this comes from actually having a strong empathy and understanding with people, something that is lacking in many of the people that would usually talk about this topic nowadays.

The newer edition has wisely upgraded the initial task, in each of its 30 sub-units, of connecting new vocabulary items to their definitions after the reading of a passage. The passages are similar to but shorter than Academic IELTS passages. The twenty new words in a list are broken down to more manageable groups of about five words. Also added is practice in paraphrasing. Students have to recognize from a choice of two or three the one which offers the best paraphrase of a sentence from the passage. The follow up material after the vocabulary has been taught and practiced in very useful word family exercises (which students in my experience find difficult) is the chance to do a Task 1 or Task 2 writing exercise based on the subject of the reading, or, in other units, the chance to have a discussion about the topic of the reading. Or even to listen to something about the topic. So a very useful book which integrates the skills. (If only the actual exam did the same!) I use it as supplementary material and produce an answer sheet much like an IELTS answer sheet but broken down into the different sections. This enables students to send me their answers on one sheet which students like and also it makes for easy grading.
