From the failure to condemn Judge Roy Moore, to the bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, to the removal of all its Native Americans, to the brutal oppression of labor by the Birmingham Steel industry, to the cult-like status of Alabama football, to the posturing of George Wallace, we are given dramatic, almost grotesque visions of the nature of the place. Perhaps it can hardly be that bad.I have often believed that the best insights into a soul can come from an ex-lover. For good or ill, the opinion of someone who was once too deeply involved to ever be a credible judge in the moment, but who gains some objectivity (from time and distance) with which to analyze those more profound, recondite, deeply felt, and ineffable elements of that which they once loved, may be the best one and most reliable one. Diane McWhorter sees Birmingham, Alabama, in just this way. And she tells the story of it that most of us want to hear, that of the former lover, who still has some affection.This may be most apparent in the Afterward, in which she deftly describes the experience of attending the trial of some of those church bombers, decades after the fact, and after many of he goals of the Civil Rights Movement have taken hold. There is a capacity for spontaneous myth making that I believe exists in the Southern heart, and she better than any writer has a sense for this.I urge you to read “Carry Me Home,” by Diane McWhorter, not only to learn the incredible details of this microcosm of the larger Civil Rights Movement, but also to have someone hold your hand while you wander among the bombings, the Klan rallies, the oppression, and the hatred. Amidst this apparent inhumanity, she never lets you lose sight of the humanity of the participants. She also casually lifts the curtain from much of what has been overvalued by more glossy histories, the Kennedys, Dr. King, the Movement itself. You will find this book gripping, evocative, well written, insightful, exhaustively researched, and charming.You will also feel like you are part of the family, because that is what Ms. McWhorter conveys. You are never removed from the events of the text. And as you gain insights into her journey to the unreachable soul of mid-twentieth century Alabama, you will get the uneasy feeling that you are also looking at the shadows of current, modern America.

As a southerner and as a fellow student at the Monterey Defense Language Institute in 1965 with FBI agents being reassigned from their stint in Birmingham Alabama I have personal connections to Diane McWhorter incredible story of the breaking of Jim Crow in the years she covers by what came to be call the Civil Rights Movement. J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI was a mar on our history along with other law enforcing agencies, local state and federal as Ms McWhorter well reveals. It is part of her tale.Until I saw that she has spend 19 years on intense research it was impossible to imagine she might have acquired the detail interactions of the participants in that drama. The out standing actor is Fred Shuttlesworth and on my reading that at the entrance to his final resting place, “at the wooded entrance to the historic downtown graveyard, a giant American flag swelled from the extended ladder of a Birmingham fire truck,” I could not suppress a thunderous sob.Who might look forward to reading Carry Me Home, very few I suspect. It lays open a grotesque sore of American History and the author’s technique of laying down detain, hour by hour day by day, is trying to any reader; take it in small doses but persist for there is pleasure in knowing that for almost all Americans today North and South that sore was well lanced by Shuttlesworth and his better known assistances’; we are healthier people for it. But healthier is not synonymous with well as McWhorter goes on to show discussing more current Birmingham Alabama and American events.The author’s sections entitled ‘McWhorter’ goes a long way towards explaining motivation for the book, as father and family holds a role as racist, if not bomber.

This book is a study of the history of race relations in Birmingham, Alabama from late 1930s to 1963, the year of the bombing of Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. McWhorter provides a comprehensive account of the story of the Pittsburgh of the South. As she presents, resistance to integration was not only the view of the extreme fringe of the white community, but also a nuanced consensus that linked the gentlemen in country clubs and humbler working class families together. The vestige of white supremacy, still largely intact in the older generation, should be embraced but not intentionally ignored. The solid work is a cornerstone of the plethora of literature on the civil rights movement. Prior knowledge is preferable as the author gives a lot of details on local actors and minor events.

It's easily one of the best books I have read about the Civil Rights struggle. McWhorter was a 5th grader in Birmingham, AL the year Birmingham was the focus of the struggle - in one of the leading families there (in a middle class branch). That impacts her writing, not that she heard any of it at the time, but that she knows the culture of the rich who controlled the town. And that drives her in to detail that I think an outside historian would never get.I read in numerous books how Birmingham was the city of hate. And how the children marching was key to the shift in people's views that led to civil rights. But this explained why.With the focus on Birmingham you see the South in detail and how the culture, the local politics, and the specific people impacted and eventually shifted the world. It also paints a complete picture of the key people involved which adds so much.I was reading until I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer at night. And then back to reading the first thing the next morning. Incredibly well written.

For the price, this Oxford University Press Gift Edition of the Book of Common Prayer is hard to beat. Anyone looking for an inexpensive version for home or travel would do well to consider this version.PROS:* Lays flat, a real plus, and not always a sure thing with imitation leather or a book this small. Honestly, I was impressed.* The imitation leather "Vivella" cover has a smooth, rubbery surface that is unusual yet makes for a sure feel in-hand.* The quality is excellent for a book of this type and in this price range, with a well-made spine, good paper, and crisp typefaces.* Good use of white space keeps the text readable, despite being on the smaller side.* Includes a sewn-in placemarker ribbon.CONS:* The editors can't decide whether they will stick with "thee," "thou," and "thine" or use less archaic pronouns. That this seems to fluctuate throughout the text is annoying, especially when notes say these older pronouns will be italicized, yet they are routinely not.* While the small typeface is not a problem in most of the book, a few sections of notes are downright minuscule.* My copy came with some slight pressure damage to the sides of the pages.Again, for someone looking for a Book of Common Prayer, this is a great value. Recommended.

This readers edition of the BOCP is the perfect size for me. The paper is very nice and the size of the print is very readable in any situation. I enjoy praying the Daily Office and this edition makes it easy. I opted for the Genuine Leather cover and it is extremely nice! The leather is thick, yet flexible, made to last a lifetime.

This compact BCP is an ideal, compact size, but also quite readable, even to eyes of advancing years. Its "imitation leather" binding makes it flexible, though the imitation is purely theoretical. It looks nothing like leather, more like a vinyl/plastic melange, but it is nonetheless attractive. This edition does NOT contain the actual readings for the three-year cycle lectionary, but only gives Biblical references for where those passages can be found. So, one would still need an actual common lectionary or else a Bible, to accompany this volume.

This is a well-sized and well constructed BCP for personal use. It is nice looking enough to give as a present for a baptism, confirmation, etc. The biggest drawback is that the book is printed on paper so thin that you can read the print on the other side of the page or on the next page. (One can read the bottom of p.13 through the bottom of p. 11 quite easily!)I do not think that I would want to have it for my primary prayer book, but the price is right. I intend to give them to my confirmation class this year.

I an not an Episcopalian, but I occasionally worship at a nearby Episcopal church, and I have been intrigued by the Book of Common Prayer - so many resources for personal meditation and spiritual growth. I am quite pleased with this edition, which is lovely to look at as well as to hold. Just the right size. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a personal copy of the Book of Common Prayer - really to anyone who follows this religious tradition - because it supports and encourages turning to worship beyond the regular worship services offered by the church.

Same high quality I've come to expect from Oxford University Press genuine leather-bound bibles and prayer books (of which I own several). Beautiful leather cover, binding, print. Will use and cherish this book for many years to come. One observation: some of the reviews below do not seem to be for this particular OUP leather-bound edition of the Book of Common Prayer; rather, they seem to be for other versions of the BCP, of which there are many.

I had found a copy of this at a local thrift store and it had seen some use so I wanted to find one identical to it that was in good quality and at a reasonable price. I found that here on Amazon. The binding is beautiful and looks like it will stand up to some good use. The cover is so soft and pristine and I tend to baby my books so after almost 6 months it looks just like when it was delivered to me. The font size is readable and clear. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is seeking a BCP that can be taken on trips or anywhere without being too bulky.

As far as rating the content of the book...its the BCP! The book is well manufactured with the typical thin onion skin pages. The burgundy and gold is conservative yet beautiful. My only complaint is that I wish it had a ribbon to mark pages. Though that is easily remedied with a bookmark.

Addict thinking is a great concept but it's a bit like trying to understand insanity, it can't be understood. The lies, the self condemnation, the grandiosity, the completely selfish and self absorbed distorted thinking patterns of addicts are designed to do one thing, convince the addict he or she can find relief in their drug(s) of choice. This book does as good as any in explaining the disease is centered in the mind but I don't like how people at the forefront of treatment still refer to alcoholism and addiction as two separate and distinct diseases. Alcohol is a drug, a very powerful very addictive and very destructive drug for an addict. But a drug is a drug is a drug and alcoholism is simply a term for a drug addict whose drug use involves ethyl alcohol. Why is this important? Because by promoting such distinctions, the effect is that we stigmatize opiate addicts, meth addicts, prescription addicts as being "less than" those who have an alcohol addiction. This stigmatization is contrary to treatment's goal of helping addicts, all addicts. You cannot tell a meth addict or an opiate addict to seek recovery in AA and yet not once in this book is Narcotics Anonymous NA mentioned nor is Naranon, the family group recovery program mentioned and that is a shame for someone at the forefront of drug treatment. Astonishing really.

I've read a lot of books about addiction, but "Addictive Thinking: Understanding Self-Deception" by Abraham J. Twerski is the only one that describes me to a tee. Addicts are malfunctioning human beings whose thinking and concept of reality are severely distorted. Addictive diseases resemble schizophrenia in many ways. The addict may suffer from delusions, hallucinations, inappropriate moods, and abnormal behavior. I one point in my addiction, I thought that I was schizophrenic. I knew that something was horribly wrong with me, but it couldn't have anything to do with the massive amounts of drugs I was ingesting. According to Twerski, addicts have a distorted self-image and they all have extremely low self-esteem. Even though they may have many life-accomplishments and every reason to think highly of themselves, they still feel inferior. Addicts are also hypersensitive. They are emotionally sensitive to their environment the way a sunburn victim is sensitive to touch. Drugs and alcohol offer immense relief from this hypersensitivity, numbing the emotions that bring such discomfort. Twerski has also given me a better understanding of what is really happening when an addict reaches "rock bottom." My daughter requested this book while she was in treatment for drug addiction. The book had been recommended by a friend who had the same struggles. This book has given her more insight into herself and her addiction than anything else she has read or done. She has been battling this for several years and I think this book is what is helping her to stay clean and strong. If you have a child in jail or treatment and they want to change their behaviors I highly recommend it..

This is a wonderful book for those of us who have a family member struggling with addiction. Although my husband has been in recovery for over thirty years I didn’t really understand until I read Doctor Twerski’s book when my daughter was dealing with her own addiction. This is actually the fourth or fifth one I have purchased because I keep giving them away. It is only when you understand how your loved one thinks and how their brain works, can you help them and yourself. I strongly recommend this book

A therapist actually suggested I give this a read to better understand those around me that were suffering from addiction and while I haven't finished it yet, it's already helped more than anything else has as of yet. It really gives the best depiction of an addict's mind and puts it into the most sensible comparison a normal person could understand, and all the while is comfortable to read and not full of jargon and such.

This book is not helpful. It is very poor in describing subject matter. There are no details, and there are much better books out there. My personal recommendations are The Four Seasons of Recovery for Parents of Alcoholics and Addicts, Beyond Addiction (How Science and Kindness Help People Change, and The Addictive Personality (Understanding the Addictive Process and Compulsive Behavior).

This is or should be the required textbook on addiction. It is especially helpful for recovering addicts and their families. It talks about the ways the addict's mind works, and if you are close to a recovering addict (alcohol or drugs), you will be nodding your head in recognition to many of the self-deceptions and rationalizations. It is a short book and an easy read.

About the Author

Jon R. Ramsey was an Associate Professor of English and the Dean of Studies at Skidmore College, from which he retired in 2004. His career in administration and teaching continued, however, through June 2014 at the University of California, Santa Barbara. At UCSB he was the Director of Policy and Publications for the Graduate Division and for eight years was a Continuing Lecturer in the UCSB Writing Program. He has published a number of articles and book chapters and has co-edited two books on literature, writing, and administrative issues. As an administrator and office director, he has been especially involved in creating and implementing new programs in the United States and abroad and in constructing a wide variety of policies, tasks which frequently required complex written negotiations with myriad internal and external audiences. He earned his B.A. at San Diego State University and a Ph.D. at the University of California, Riverside.

About the Author

George Jehn is a college graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree. He flew as a pilot for Eastern Airlines for approximately eighteen years, from 1970 until 1988 on the Boeing 727, Douglas DC-9 and Airbus A-300 jets. He left Eastern to work for another large airline in 1988. During his time at Eastern, he spent six years as an elected pilot Representative from Eastern's New York pilot base and was simultaneously a six-year Member of the Board of Directors of the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA)

Based on the summaries I read about they book, I expected it to be a fairly rigorous examination of the reasons, chiefly economic I supposed, of the demise of Eastern airlines, which was one of the preeminent airlines in existence when I was growing up. Not the case. Its more of an exercise in speculation by an eastern pilot who has a very specific point of view. The book's focus is really on the crash of an eastern jet in the Andes which the author believes was the key reason for the airline's sale and subsequent demise. I was not convinced. Also, way too much pilot jargon. Not a keeper.

I remember in the news in the mid-80s of an Eastern Airline flight that crashed in the mountains in South America.I remember the news was short lived and there were no real conclusions to what really had happened.As the saying goes "Time heals",but time can also make you "forget". I believe in this instance this is the case.I was saddened by the facts the author brought forward. How haunting this must have been for George Jehn to live his life knowing and holding in all this truth.I always wondered why an accident of this magnitude had so many loose ends with no conclusions.I cant imagine the pain and anguish of the employees and their families by the decisions made by the people running the airline.This book is a testament for the people who lost their jobs and lives.I feel this book is a case of "Mans inhumanity to Man".I one day hope this story can be told on the big screen,for all to see what happened to one of the largest airlines in the world.The damage that was done to the families,employees and all who were touched and paid so dearly.

Having worked closely with Skip, knowing George and Charlie Bryan, some of the other key players during my tenure as grievance chairman of the Miami ALPA LEC, i can vouch for the accuracy of George's documentation and narrative of the pre-sale negotiations. At the time, the lack of investigation of the Flight 980 crash was overshadowed by the turmoil Borman created for diversion. There WERE rumors and newspaper reports of large scale drug smuggling aboard our planes. We were too distracted to notice either.What George doesn't mention is the hundreds of millions of dollars Eastern had in outstanding borrowing, and, having seen one of the loan documents, I was mystified that EASTERN HAD TO MAINTAIN A CASH BALANCE OF EXACTLY THE AMOUNT OF THE LOAN IN THE BANK THAT ISSUED IT! All the time Borman was moaning about the million dollars a day in interest he was paying. At the same time, most of our fleet was already paid for, which was subsequently brought to light in the bankruptcy proceedings. Little wonder that lists of bank board members and EAL board members is fairly repetitive.I and another pilot went all the way to the Supreme Court, without lawyers, in our fight to force Texas Air/Continental to live up to the Labor Protective Provisions they had signed. The Bankruptcy courts have no jurisdiction over Railway Labor Act, but they ruled in favor of the companies every time, (in the Eastern case), not only abrogating contracts, but also giving employees' retirement pay away to them. By the time, five years later, the Court refused to hear our case, even a dumb pilot like me knew the fix was in.Having proved the strategy, nearly every big corporation in America has used it to rob their stockholders and disenfranchise their employees. This is now the model of American business, and why, unless you are a one-percenter in on the scam, your standard of living is declining. Eastern's story is YOUR story.

I was a big fan of Eastern Air Lines and wanted to know what REALLY happened and who was involved in the loss of this American icon. George Jehn is a master of communicating in a sensible order and clarity of this very complex situation resulting in the downfall of one of history's great airlines. Kudos to Capt. Jehn for this Herculian effort. So many lives were irreversibly changed forever. George was there and got down to the nitty gritty of who, what, when and where. Certainly Frank Borman was key participant. His image has for ever been changed to the negitive due to this clear narrative.I highly recommend this factual account of how this huge successful airline was torn apart. Anyone wanting a career in this industry or is a fan of airlines would want to read this book. I recommend it as very informative and as such,required reading.

George Jehn combines excellent research with a mystery that draws the reader into putting the pieces together to reach their own conclusion. This narrative will be particularly interesting to anyone who is fascinated with aviation in the days pre-dating automation. Includes elements of Alaska bush flying.

This book is a non-fiction corporate thriller, an in-depth analysis of the events which destroyed Eastern Airlines. The author, a pilot for the airline as well as a union representative and board member of the Air Line Pilots Association, had a unique perspective to the events leading up to Eastern’s demise.The book describes several events seemingly unrelated to the corporate intrigue, including the January 1985 crash of Eastern Flight 980 in the Andes Mountains at 19,600 feet --- the highest crash site in aviation history. The author provides all the relevant theories, as well as his own conclusions based on exhaustive interviews and research. He weaves all of these events together, with a compelling argument to make his case.While the events described in the book are serious, affecting the lives of forty thousand airline employees, “Final Destination Disaster: What Really Happened to Eastern Airlines”, is a non-stop thrill ride.

There was a lot of speculation on the part of the writer. I beleive Lorenzo shut down Eastern because of libility in that the pilots were trained going down to SA and not trained or observed on the trip North. I was one of the five checkairmen involved and was adament that training in the return flight was a must after consulting with Braniff pilots. The powers that be decided to save the added expense.
