From the Back Cover

Today's workforce is experiencing job burnout in epidemic proportions. Workers at all levels, both white- and blue-collar, feel stressed out, insecure, misunderstood, undervalued, and alienated at their workplace. But what can be done to offset the devastating effects of organizational downsizing, outsourcing, and restructuring? This original and important book debunks the common myth that when workers suffer job burnout they are solely responsible for their fatigue, anger, and "don't give a damn" attitude. The Truth About Burnout clearly shows where the accountability often belongs . . . squarely on the shoulders of the organization. Burnout is shown to be a sign of a major dysfunction within an organization, and says more about the workplace than it does about the employees. Written by Drs. Christina Maslach and Michael Leiter leaders in the study of job burnout The Truth About Burnout challenges the accepted thinking about burnout and focuses on how to describe, predict, and alleviate this problem. The authors give workers, managers, and company leaders guidelines and strategies for eradicating the underlying problems within an organization that are the true source of burnout. They propose a new paradigm for organizational health and offer specific prescriptive measures. These measures—both for assessment, goal-setting, and techniques of crisis intervention, and for preventing burnout in the future—demand both collective initiative from employees and substantial cooperation from management. The organizational change that is required will not only alleviate this problem--it also offers management the promise of greater profitability. For it is only engaged and committed employees who can remain functional and productive for the long run.

Christina Maslach is well-known in psychology as the person who has championed the problem of burnout over more than two decades. For quite a time she was something of a lone voice.Burnout is a prolonged response to chronic physical, emotional and interpersonal stressors at work, leading to exhaustion, cynicism and inefficacy. In a memorable term the authors describe it as erosion of the soul.Burnout has to be seen in the larger organizational context of people's relationship with their work: it's usually the job and the organization rather than the individual, although there are clearly differences in individuals' resilience to burnout. There are many symptoms of burnout, including trouble sleeping, constantly worrying, feeling unappreciated or "used" at work and feeling less effective or competent. Many people find that they easily becoming angry or irritated and altogether too many start drinking or abusing other substances.Burnout is immensly costly, not just for individuals, but also for organizations. I agree with another reviewer who lamented the paucity of data on just how costly burnout is to a company's bottom line. But judging by the number of corporations now asking epxerts to go in and help them deal with the burnout problem, I think that the message is getting through. This is an excellent overview of the problem nearly ten years ago. If anything, the situation is becoming worse, and Maslach, and now an expanding band of other psychologists has continued to do empirical research on the problem, and have been coming up with ever more sophisticated solutions. But even with the passage of time, this book remains highly recommended.

In the Truth About Burnout Drs. Maslach and Leiter propose the first real cure for burnout and the key to releasing peak potential in the workforce.Much of the past advice on the topic of burnout focuses on how to help people cope with burnout. These techniques are useful and come in handy, but unfortunately they do not position or fortify people to reach higher levels of performance. Simply treating the symptoms of burnout is like giving someone a medicine that provides temporary relief from external signs that they have a cold. After the medication wears off, they still have a virus raging through their body that's slowing them down. Likewise the "virus" that causes burnout is disengagement with work and no matter what temporary relief solution we provide to ease the pain, in the form of workshops on how to cope and "employee assistance programs" at the end of the day the "virus of disengagement" is still alive and well and impairing performance. This book is for anyone manager or individual contributor who has decided to stop coping and "sugar-coating" and instead seek a real and practical solution to burnout. I highly recommend it.Joe Santana,Co-author Manage IT

Good insights. Sometimes too much opinion not backed by research.

I currently teach a graduate-level course on Burnout in the Helping Professions. This book serves as the "bible" on burnout and prevention strategies from both organizational and personal perspectives. Use it fopr academic purposes as well as personal reasons. You'll be glad you did!

I found the book to be very insightful and helpful.

provides great insights to understanding burnout and its management

Writing a Woman's Life

From the Inside Flap

"Astute and provocative....Blends the sophistication of recent feminist theory with highly textured details fro the lives of independent and ambitious women."THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEWDrawing on the experience of celebrated women, from George Sand and Virginia Woolf to Dorothy Sayers and Adrienne Rich, Heilbrun examines the struggle these writers undertook when their drives made it impossible for them to follow the traditional "male" script for a woman's life. Refreshing and insightful, this is an homage to brave women past and present, and an invitation to all women to write their own scripts, whatever they may be.

Heilbrun is a truth teller. This is as fresh and necessary as when it was first written. Brilliant woman, wonderful writing, acute insight into our patriarchal society and the frequently unconscious ways it limits girls and women in their lives. Should be required reading in early high school. The shame is that in 2014 to see women still slogging through the same territory in spite ofthe great hope Heilbrun had for the generation coming of age in the 70s 'women's movement'.

Ground breaking, subtle, lots of food for thought.

I recommend this book to someone who has a curiosity for knowing some aspects on woman's biographies. Heilbrun has a assertive point of view to visualize the details which conforms the writing of women, but also has a great prose which makes me read the entire text in a couple of days.

Powerful and intimate. Honest and somewhat alarming in regards to her pending suicide. I learned a lot.

I find Heilbrun's writing very stimulating. This is the second of her books I've read, the first being The Last Gift of Time. I highly recommend her work to women in their maturity, who are taking a look at where they've been, and where they are going in life. It is a very positive experience.

Still relevant. Important for younger women to read.

Just right for my research

It is second hand and highlighted, but otherwise fine. For me, living in New Zealand the postage is 2-3x the cost of the book! What a pity you can't source stuff here!Jill

This book is REALLY NOT about OLD souls. It's a study of Ian Stevenson's work. He wrote one of the first detailed studies of what seems to be proof of reincarnation. One book called something like "Twenty Cases Suggestive of Reincarnation" and "Children Who Remember Previous Lives." He went to India, Thailand, Burma and other countries where there were children born into families that started saying as soon as they could talk, that these parents were not their real parents. This fellow rode around with Ian and reports in detail what he saw, heard and learned.Ian Stevenson used the most exacting and demanding methodology that he could manage. I really enjoyed this book! But the souls that were reborn seemed rather YOUNG. Just jumping back into a body not long after they suffered a violent death. That is, I have ideas about what OLD souls are—people that have lived through many many lives and have grown wise. To jump right into some new baby's body soon after your death is not so wise! But that does not take away from what the book teaches you.

Whether or not you're "into" past lives, this is a good read. Rather than concentrating on long transcripts of hypnotized patients, this book concentrates on the work of Ian Stevenson. Dr Stevenson has devoted his time to interviewing children who began to talk about a recent life that they lived just before this one. He does this work exclusively because of the difficulty of being certain that the hypnotized person isn't just trying to please the hypnotist. Also, very young children cannot have read articles about their supposed past lives, cannot have ulterior motives for saying they have lived before, nor anyway to fake remembering the people and places they remember. It'd fascinating reading, although I could have done with less complaining about the difficulties of getting around in Lebanon and India.

If you are looking for a book of detailed cases of reincarnation, this is NOT the right book. This has VERY LITTLE information about actual reincarnation cases. This book is the story of Schroder, who goes along with a man who is following up on reincarnation cases. It is basically him describing just the conditions surrounding those trips, NOT the actual cases of reincarnation. HUGE let down. He talks about the streets, the buildings and the driving for 90% of the book.

Amazing stories of children in Beirut, Lebanon and various parts of India who remembered their past lives - many of whose former families were alive. The children were able to identify their former families by name, and other amazing details of their connections, which would seem most unlikely unless they were who they said they were - i.e,, children from those families who had died, and been reborn in neighboring villages.I have known about Ian Stevenson's work for a long time, but the account by this journalist who accompanied him on his last trips to Beirut and India made the stories more interesting to read, while at the same time upholding the research standards that Stevenson required.

Thomas Shroder writes with such descriptives you feel as if you are beside him and seeing the places first hand. There is such honesty in his words as well that the second part of book concerning India left me depressed by the visuals I conjured from his descriptions of the communities. Its a book Id love the world to read because it doesn't try to demand you believe - it simply presents facts that leaves you feeling that 'something is still missing' and knowing that what 'is missing 'can only be found on a deeply personal level within yourself by seeking the truth.Shroder gives you choices, opens a door you can choose or deny to enter. He asks questions you ask yourself and he answers them without demanding you accept his opinions or views. He makes Ian Stevenson a personal friend and associate to the readers. I fell united with them both and I truly hope he continues his research in these areas and shares more of his beautifully written works with the world.

First, I have to say that several of the reviewers have said that somewhere on the cover it was stated that this book provided PROOF of reincarnation, and they then rated this book poorly for not providing such iron-clad proof. After reading these reviews, I studied the cover once again, trying to find where it states that any proof will be given - yet, there's no such statement ANYWHERE! What it states is that they will provide "compelling evidence" - and in my opinion they have achieved this goal."Old Souls" discusses some of those cases suggestive of reincarnation that Dr. Ian Stephenson had investigated during his career. These cases are found all over the world, but this book tends to discuss only those found in Lebanon, India, and a few in the US. Much of the info. provided tends to be clinical in a sense, but one has to remember that Dr. Stephenson is trying to pursue this from a scientific point of view - in an effort to bring this sort of research into the mainstream. The author, Thomas Shroder, is a journalist skeptic who followed Dr. Stephenson on the last few of his journeys. I must say that it's hard at times to read how the skeptics view the evidence, as it seems to show without a doubt the saying that believers don't need extraordinary proof, but to the skeptic, no proof is good enough. However, by the end, this skeptic was at least left wondering - not willing to deny everything he saw and heard - at least thats a start...Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in spirituality in general, and more specifically reincarnation. It provides an excellent view into the research, and how & why the skeptics tend to rip it apart.
