First, let me say that my son was/is an addict & just over a year clean & sober. After he asked for help & we got him into the in-house rehab, based upon AA/NA principles, he came home on a day pass & we took him to eat @ the restaurant of his choice & then to to see the movie of his choice. Afterward, I asked him what helped him make the decision to become clean...first, he said us, then, he said he'd read the Heroine Diaries by Nikki Sixx, which he first checked out @ the local library...& then asked me to get as an ebook. It moved him.. I was working on my master's degree @ the time & didn't get a chance to read it until after I'd earned my degree (a/k/a yesterday). I finished it today. Nikki, your book was brutally honest & touched my kid to his soul. Now, I understand why. I'm thankful you wrote it. Thanks for helping me save the most important human being in my life...he's only 25 years old. He's going places now & has. remained strong. We just went to our first concert together on 10/10/15 in Evansville, IN....we both saw Motley Crue for the very first time (I've been trying to see your band since I was 16.. Crue has always been my favorite band...& Drew grew up listening to it his entire life. So...thank you for helping us through many tough times & helping him turn his life around & to you...congrats on your rehabilitation -Kim

Nikki hits a home run on this one. The first thing that struck me is the way the book is presented. It's not a dry, white page, black words presentation - it's constructed in a graphic novel motif, complete with sketches and anecdotal notes from Nikki and those around him at the time (Dec. 1986 - Dec. 1987). It was during this period I saw the Crue on the GGG tour. Little did the 18 yo in row 23 on the floor of the Spectrum realize the suicidal path of my heroes. This book makes you feel like taking a shower; it is raw, brutal, dirty, and always honest. This disease knows no boundaries, and Nikki shows (with a lot of hard work), you can manage to put a life together. The book is very sad a times, but so worth the read.

I really enjoyed reading Nkki's account of his rapid and total descent into heroin addiction. Its full of honesty and candor and he at no time makes excuses for it or blames others for it. Although his unstable childhood was no doubt a factor, he totally owns and takes responsibility for his behavior and addiction. I also enjoyed reading the perspectives of others who were around him during this time. It is truly amazing that he survived and is still around to talk about it. Its a cautionary tale that speaks volumes of his strength and resilience to make it through the horror of addiction, as so many other brilliant artists do not. Nikki's reflection on this time period of his life makes for good reading even if you're not a Motley Cru fan. It may even make you take a closer look.

Motley Crue is my favorite band of all time. I've seen them play several times and they never disappoint. The Dirt on Motley Crue was an amazing read, so raw. In this book I find Nikki genuine and vulnerable. A series of journals written in a truly dark time of his life. I can't even believe he was able to even think to write in a journal at this time of his life. I'm glad he did. His upbringing is relatable but lead him down a very deep path. great book, easy read, so well written.

I have to give this book 5 stars! This book, showed me, that when you love a band, and think you’re a super fan and know everything about them. I knew nothing, I never knew, Nikki Sixx was so broken, and has endured so much, and am amazed he came through everything he endured! This book gave me so much more respect, for him, and for the music he wrote for Motley Crue. I now find myself listening more to the lyrics and feeling some of the pain. I totally would recommend this book to not only Motley Crue fans, or Nikki Sixx fans, but anyone going through hardships or whatever your going through in life, we all can take notes from this man.

Excellent book. I'm a child of the 80s, so I grew up on Crue. I saw Vince way back when he was fired/quit from the band and went solo ,and he did all the Crue's songs anyway. And I saw them on their farewell tour in 2015.Excellent first person narrative of a man going to his own personal hell. The additional commentaries by people who were there to watch his fall and give their perspective is fascinating. Nikki's inside dirt on who did what to who and when is darkly funny and compellingAn excellent read and cautionary tale of what unlimited access to whatever you want can do to you.Crue fans will love it and even if you're not a fan/not of this age category, it's just a plain good read.

About the Author

Floyd E. Toole studied electrical engineering at the University of New Brunswick and at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London where he received a Ph.D. In 1965 he joined the National Research Council of Canada where he reached the position of Senior Research Officer in the Acoustics and Signal Processing Group. In 1991 he joined Harman International Industries Inc. as Corporate Vice President – Acoustical Engineering. In this position he worked with all Harman International companies and directed the Harman Research and Development Group, a central resource for technology development and subjective measurements, retiring in 2007. He is currently a consultant to Harman. Dr. Toole’s research has focused on the acoustics and psychoacoustics of sound reproduction in small rooms, directed to improving engineering measurements, objectives for loudspeaker design and evaluation, and techniques for reducing variability at the loudspeaker / room / listener interface. For papers on these subjects he has received two AES Publications Awards and, for service to the society, the Board of Governors Award. For his achievements he has been recognized with both the AES Silver Medal (1996) and Gold Medal (2013) Awards. He is a Fellow and Past President of the AES, a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and a Fellow of CEDIA (Custom Design and Installarion Association). He has been awarded Lifetime Achievement awards by CEDIA and ALMA (Association of Loudspeaker Manufacturing & Acoustics International). He has recently written a book: "Sound Reproduction: the acoustics and psychoacoustics of loudspeakers and rooms." (Focal Press, 2008).

You need to be realistic if you purchase this book. The author is a superb scientist and recognized authority in the field of acoustic engineering. If you have a strong background in the "hard sciences" i.e. math, physics, chemistry then you'll get a lot out of this book. I have advanced degrees in biological sciences and frankly much of this book was too complex for me. It should also be said, at least IMO, that the book could be edited very substantially as quite a bit of material is repeated and again IMO quite a bit is unnecessary. If you are determined you will glean very helpful tips about speaker placement and a greater understanding of low frequency behavior in rooms, but it will be painful and time consuming. The folks at Audioholics reference Dr. Toole often and they manage to distill his teachings into much more practical and easy to digest bits on their YouTube channel.

In short, I keep re-reading this book - probably the last collection by Floyd Toole. I wish most speaker manufacturers would heed his advice and give the consumer the data they need to make meaningful decisions. As an engineer (retired) but from another discipline, I gather a lot of useful information in this book. Sean Olive or other protege should come up with an enhanced version in the future. Discuss, please, the types of automatic room equalization systems available, and which ones work well and which don't. I've done a lot of manual equalization after the first steps of speaker placement and some room treatment. Various devices enable rapid measurements now. A means to bring all this data together and provide a downloadable EQ curve to a parametric equalizer is something I would like to see (as opposed to some proprietary algorithm where one just presses a button.) The consumer digital camera world has become very technical, precise and accurate in terms of product technical reviews of capability and performance. Even in 2016, and at the most extreme prices, "HiFi" continues to be defined by "snake oil" salesmen. And the Audio Critic is dead. Is anyone listing to Toole other than JBL?

I am not going to write long about that book. Simply put: it just changed my attitude completely. Many things in this book seems contradictory to the common knowledge. That pushed me to investigate more on the topic (especially in terms of loudspeakers), that as a consequence led me to Mr. Linkwitz web page...Then I realized that I was spending huge amount of money to be able to listened to some nice music...and all that was not necessary. Suddenly I got to know that proper loudspeakers could sound fantastic in my empty, modern equipped living room. I then got one, tested them and found most of the concepts in the book to be accurate and true. Now, my specially designed "listening room" (with "golden dimensions", acoustic treatment etc.) stays empty...and my wife used to call it "guest room" as we all listen to the music in our living room now.

My son in college is studying engineering and is very interested in learning more about this subject. He says it is exactly what he was looking for!

Very good for home theater and stereo playback in small room acoustics such as consumer rooms. Covers small room acoustics much better than the normal acoustics books.

I used to count myself among these ranks, but ultimately lost interest and patience with more than one dealer, and ultimately the industry itself. Why? Too much snake oil and "need for component, cable, interconnect matching and the egregious amounts of money needed to do so" whose collective impact IMHO is maybe a couple of percent of the total--assuming the equipment is competently designed and matched. I bought this and two other books recently as I have become more interested the DIY aspects of the hobby, including designing and building loudspeakers.There is a lot to recommend this book--not the least that Dr. Toole takes to task at least a segment of the industry which includes tin eared and/or unprincipled reviewers and some of the makers of loudspeakers who cannot seem to be troubled with getting a reasonably flat frequency curve from their products. Some of the other book reviews lament that Dr. Toole doesn't go so far as to name names in some of these instances. Personally I am fine with the fact that he chooses not to. Besides I suspect that there is enough info given to make some well informed guesses.The book is much more, and while I consider myself more of an old school 2 channel kind of guy, read with great interest his thoughts on the future of audio and the need for multichannel reproduction. Also fascinating was the research (some of it decades old) showing that golden eared gray bearded gurus may not be the ones to be offering advice as the effects of age on the hearing might be greater than generally appreciated, and besides, that those with good hearing can generally be counted on to arrive at a consensus of what sounds good even lacking special training, secret handshakes, and the opportunity to listen at length in their own homes.If you're one of the readers who breathlessly waits each month for tales of how some 7000 dollar DAC beat the pants off one costing 1/2 as much--at least most of the time with some types of source material but only after burning in for several weeks--this book may not be for you--even though you may be the one to most profit from a thorough reading. If you have a general interest in the hows and whys of music reproduction along with some great history from an industry insider, I think you will find like I did, a very compelling read and a book worth keeping handy.Highly recommended.

Great book to learn about sound reproduction! Tons of useful information.

The use of test signals were never my forte but I did use them for subwoofer intergration and speaker and sub phase response. Dr. Toole is right on about so many setup and bad and good myths and I like the fact that I used many of his techniques instinctively.Music after using Pink and Brown noise was ofcourse the main tool in capturing the best in music as per quality of timbre and proper bass and high frequency reproduction.A great book from a great mind, Highly recomended, John M.
