I never dreamed that one of the best books I would ever read would be about fluoride. It has been more than eye opening to what is truly going on in communities all over the US. I have heard for years that money talks, but after reading this book there is the realization that decency has become deafened by greed. I am saddened to be an American. What our government and industry is doing to the population is unconscionable, putting a toxic Co-product of the phosphate industry in our water supply so our bodies and environment are the filter for their waste product. The book is entertaining and informative and well worth your time. For me it has been a gateway to investigations of other crimes that have been perpetuated on us all in the name of profit. (Anyone that loves children please check out the movie "Vaxxed") Thankfully there are still some among us that seek truth and are willing to share it with others. Christopher Bryson should be commended for his 10 years of arduous work to bring this book to fruition. Hopefully water fluoridation will finally be recognized as dangerous, as was DDT, lead in our paint and gasoline, asbestos, cigarettes and having our feet x-rayed for fun. After all the same laboratories and institutions that so ardently promote water fluoridation assured us that all of these were completely safe. God bless us all in our efforts to rectify a practice that is hazardous to our health and our environment.

This book reads like a spy thriller, it is a very compelling book, with a lot of evidence showing how the real reason for water fluoridation has absolutely nothing to d with reducing dental cavities.

Should be read by everyone, especially those in local and state governments.

Very news worthy , easy to read a good read for all . Delivered on time, and condition was good

"The Fluoride Deception" is a scathing indictment of how the U.S. medical community, big corporations, and the federal government, misled the American public for decades about the dangers of fluoride. Filled with scientific studies and historical documents, all fully annotated, Bryson mounts a point by point attack on the flimsy, fallacious arguments of pro-fluoride advocates. He shows us the secret history of fluoride, how it was connected to the development of the atomic bomb, and the self-serving and sly actions of those corporations, mainly metal manufacturers, in deceiving the public into believing that fluoride was safe to add to our water supplies. Using public opinion techniques developed by spin doctors like Edward Bernays, these companies used every technique known in modern propaganda science to convince Americans and the world that fluoride was just another natural and harmless chemical, when the opposite was true and they knew it. In a race to develop atom bombs to counteract a perceived threat from its former ally, the Soviet Union, the United States broadened its nuclear development program through an unprecedented collusion between government and industry. In his farewell address to the nation in 1961, president Eisenhower warned that "we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the Military-Industrial Complex." This complicity is seen clearly in the history of fluoride and the public relations exercise carried out by government and industry that fooled America into thinking this deadly chemical was good for a our teeth. As it turns out, fluoride, and its industrial counterpart fluorine gas, described by some as a "violent monster," is one of the most toxic chemicals on the planet inducing skeletal fluorosis, arthritis, thyroid problems, bone cancer, and hyperactivity in animals. As Bryson explains, fluoride is a necessary ingredient in nuclear bomb production, as essential as uranium. In the 1940's, the U.S. government and corporate America were faced with a flurry of worker and citizen lawsuits about fluoride poisoning. Industry-sponsored research and clever spin control transformed the nation's perception of fluoride from a toxic chemical pollutant into a medical supplement dispensed in water.Bryson documents how various industries funded studies that showed the dangers of fluoride to workers in metal fabricating plants, and nuclear bomb production-factories. The most damaging studies were kept hidden from public sight until recently.Fluoride, ubiquitous in so many household products, turns out to be one of the most deadly known chemicals and has no safe place in our food supply. That the U.S. medical establishment supports adding it to our water only attests to the gigantic and criminal fraud that has been perpetrated upon the U.S. and a few other countries that advocate fluoridation. Bryson's book is one of the best I have ever read on any subject. Read it if you want to know the disturbing truth about the secret agendas of those who make public policy in America.(Dr. Simeon Hein is the author of "Opening Minds: A Journey of Extraorindary Encounters, Crop Circles, and Resonance" and the forthcoming "Planetary Intelligence.")

So much info here that I did not know. Should be read by everyone the world over.

Really an outstanding book. His writing is very clear, and it's obvious that he has done a tremendous amount of research (most of it from primary sources, which is always a good start). He does an excellent job of documenting the situation while slowly advancing the overall assertion of the book.It really stands out from the great majority of books written on this subject which, unfortunately, tend to devolve into pseudoscience, conspiracy theory, and so on. There was never a "tin foil hat" moment while reading this. His analysis is calm and fair, a true sample of scholarship and insight. Highly recommended.

Amazing detailed and well referenced history of water fluoridation.

Learning to Listen: The Jazz Journey of Gary Burton: An Autobiography, by Gary Burton

From Booklist

Jazz musician Burton came out as a gay man on Terry Gross’s National Public Radio program, Fresh Air, in 1994, although he did not intend it that way. In fact, he was surprised that she brought it up given that, as he notes in his introduction, he had only started telling a few friends and colleagues “that I had finally figured out I was gay.” By that time, he was well into his forties, had been married several times, and had children. Learning to Listen is a fascinating exploration of one man, who happens to be a world-class musician, and his journey of self-discovery. He discusses his childhood in Indiana; his first music lessons at the age of six, primarily on the marimba and vibraphone; his college days at the Berklee School of Music in Boston; his early days playing the clubs in New York; his work with George Shearing and Stan Getz; forming his own quartet; and going solo. The book has plenty of anecdotes, too, such as when Duke Ellington and his band played at Burton’s high school (“I still can hardly believe they came to our little town in southern Indiana for a gig”). Burton also includes miniportraits of famous musicians he has worked with over the years, including Lionel Hampton, Milt Jackson, Miles Davis, Samuel Barber, Thelonious Monk, Red Norvo, Pat Metheny, and Chick Corea. --June Sawyers

Review

Great musicians are no respecters of borders; they cross them at will, and in doing so define their own territory. Gary Burton's career has spanned that porous borderland between jazz and rock music, between the strictures of academia and the spontaneity of live performance. It has been a fascinating journey through the great plains of music towards the high plateaux of the realized self. Bravo! --StingGary Burton's life and works have paralleled the twists and turns of a wild half-century of cultural upheaval and transition from a vantage point that is singularly fascinating and unique. Always one of the most fluent and articulate communicators of complexity and nuance as a musician, in this captivating autobiography, Gary takes us through a lifetime lived on the front lines of a shifting and evolving world with a clarity and focus that is worthy of his narrative skills as one of the greatest jazz soloists of his time. --Pat Metheny

"I will freely admit that I have a kind of love/hate relationship with music." Gary Burton."I haven't practiced the vibraphone since high school. I can go for hours, and sometimes days at a time without thinking that much about music." Gary Burton.I first heard Gary Burton many years (decades!) ago when I happened to stumble across his early album "Lofty Fake Anagram". From then on I was hooked on his sound. Burton is certainly one of the best vibes players in not just jazz, but music in general. He's absorbed and then gone beyond fine players like Lionel Hampton and Red Norvo to create his own sound, and champion a number of other players and/or composers. This great book goes a long way in explaining Burton and his music. There's 32 pages of b&w and color photographs , a Discography, and an Index. The book is broken into sections that chronologically tell Burton's personal and musical life--"Early Years", "On My Own", "Moving On", etc. The book was started about 12 years ago and finished in one long week in an L.A. hotel. But nothing sounds rushed or forced. Burton's writing style is simple and straightforward, which makes for engaging reading. Occasionally throughout the book you'll see highlighted sidebars that Burton has used to describe something or someone in particular ("Lionel Hampton: Father of the Vibes", "Vibraphone or Vibraharp?", "Stan Getz", "Miles Davis", "Thelonious Monk", "Pat Metheny", etc.), which add both interest and depth to his book. The book roughly begins with Burton talking about his beat up trophy for his first place win at the 1951 National Marimba Camp when Burton was 8 years old. He talks about his first vibraphone--"In order for me to play, my father had to build a platform the length of the instrument for me to stand on." He goes on to describe what it was like hearing jazz for the first time--Benny Goodman's "After You've Gone", and his subsequent search for jazz albums by Mingus, Brubeck, Blakey, and other jazz giants. This was the music that was the foundation of his early jazz "education". He goes on to talk about the local music scene and his earliest gigs. As Burton describes some of them--"Not all my gigs were in up scale surroundings. Sometimes, I played on a bandstand enclosed in chicken wire so the crowd couldn't throw anything at the musicians." But Burton persevered and continued to learn his instrument--eventually enrolling in the Berklee School of Music, and playing in "the big city." Plus he talks about recording his first album, "After The Riot", a jam session (unreleased) after the 1960 Newport Jazz Festival was cancelled, and playing on Floyd Cramer's record "Last Date", which was Burton's first "gold" record he played on.Burton goes on to talk about his "on the job training", working with various jazz musicians (George Shearing, Stan Getz, Red Norvo are a few mentioned), and his experiences on the West Coast, his early albums like "Out Of The Woods", "Something's Coming", and "Getz au GoGo" (sic). Also included is playing with guitarist Hank Garland in Nashville on the album "Jazz Winds From A New Direction", and his debut album as a leader, "New Vibe Man In Town". Something that made an early impression was seeing the well known Paul Gonsalves playing early on a Sunday morning with local players, just for a few extra dollars. It's when Burton talks about playing with other musicians like Stan Getz and the influences and ideas these people had on Burton and his growth as an artist that make the book even more interesting. The book is filled with stories of how Burton advanced his jazz knowledge with the help and influence of various jazz performers he met and/or played with, absorbing ideas he could use in his own music. He also goes into some detail concerning his move to the ECM label and the effects that had ("...among the best decisions I ever made.") on his playing. Burton goes into some detail about various albums for that label (with Chick Corea and others) and the members of his group (Steve Swallow for instance) that played an important part in his music. He describes in some detail his meeting (and early on as a mentor) and subsequent playing with guitarist Pat Metheny (the beautiful album of Carla Bley's compositoins "Dreams So Real" is where I first heard Metheny back in the days of vinyl), and how that affected and shaped both Metheny's and Burton's music.Plus Burton talks at length about his on going involvement with the Berklee School of Music--as a student (who dropped out to play with Shearing), a teacher, an innovator of new music departments, his eventually becoming head of day to day operations for a school that has grown to 4,000 students in a variety of fields, and beginning an on-line department of music--all of which most fans don't know anything about. This is a side of Burton that's especially interesting--his life in academia as opposed to being an "on the road" musician--and how he found time to do both jobs admirably. But there's many personal asides throughout this book--his marriages (one to Catherine Goldwyn of the Hollywood Goldwyns) and family, his divorces and his realization (with the help of therapy) that he was (is) gay, and his eventual meeting of his long time partner. Burton also discusses his major health problems and overcoming them as best he could. The book ends with Burton meeting his life partner and talking in depth about his role at Berklee, and the creative muse.As a jazz fan and long time listener of Burton's music, I've sometimes wondered why there's never been a book on Burton and his music--music that has influenced jazz over many years and given all of us many hours of enjoyment. While this is an autobiography, and Burton can pick and choose what to put in and what to leave out, he by and large does a pretty fair job at delineating his personal and professional life in jazz. This is a very readable book filled with interesting information about both Burton and jazz in general. As with many other books like this I wish Burton would've written more about recording the many albums in his discography--more in depth information about the players, the compositions, and being in the studio--only he could write about. Even so, for Burton fans it's something you might want to consider adding to your jazz library. Burton has continued releasing albums of merit over the years, so it's nice to read a book about this fine musician. It's great that the albums "New Vibe Man In Town" and "Gary Burton Quartet In Concert" are now back on the shelves. Now if someone would reissue the albums "Duster", "Country Roads And Other Places", "Live Concert" (only issued in Canada), and other early albums, jazz fans (like me) would be much happier.

As a jazz musician, I have known Gary Burton's name forever. I am currently studying improvisation with him (online thru Berklee). He is an inspired teacher and nice person, and it is a small miracle that someone of his stature is available for passing on his knowledge of music and improvisation. (It would be like getting investment advice from Warren Buffet.) Just as Gary tells plays music so eloquently, it is no surprise that he tells his own story with the same eloquence. You read of his early life in Indiana where a local lady teaches and sells xylophones, marimbas, and vibraphones. His precocious talent is noticed by anyone who hears him, and the musical doors swing wide open. His first break oddly comes in Nashville while he is still a teenager. He played clubs where he wasn't even old enough to drink. You'll read about his early days with George Shearing and Stan Getz. He is also very open and honest about discovering his sexuality. He's a legendary musician from the heartland of American who turned a mountain of talent and a big heart into an amazing career as a musician (with 70 recordings as a leader) and educator.

It puzzled me that it took so long for a book to appear on Gary Burton’s life and career because there is no question that he is a great artist, an innovator both in technique (the four-mallet technique) and playing. He has also been, over the past forty some years, one of jazz’s great combo leaders, nurturing and working with a constellation of superior players. There are, to start, the amazing string of first rate guitarists who have played in his quartets and quintets, from Larry Coryell through Jerry Hahn, Sam Brown, Mick Goodrick, Pat Metheny and John Scofield (probably the most successful of them), up to teen phenomenon Julian Lange, who started with Burton at age sixteen and has played with him at least through 2013. There are also sidemen –drummers Roy Haynes and Bob Moses, bassist Steve Swallow, and on and on, and the occasional unions with other musicians –the duets with pianist Chick Corea, an album with Keith Jarrett, another with French violin great Stephanne Grappelli, and still another with nuevo tango giant Astor Piazzolla (and after his death, two more with Piazzolla’s great quintet). And his apprenticeships with the George Shearing quintet (which had six people) and Stan Getz’s quartet. Listing the people Burton has played with is like listing my own past as a jazz listener and aficionado. Duster, his first (and very mild) fusion album appeared just when I was making the leap from teaching high school to entering grad school full time and I bought Country Roads and Other Places, an album that fused jazz and country music, the day our son was born. (He’s now 46.) Every time I play the tune “The Green Mountains” it reminds me of our son as a small boy, joyous, sunny and always moving forward. As you might expect of an artist who has also been a success as music educator, first dean and then executive vice president at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Burton explains things well. His anecdotes –often presented in sidebars—about Shearing, Swallow, Getz, Corea, Piazzolla—and others (Carla Bley, Miles, Mingus, Ellington, Milt Jackson [who for a long time nursed an irrational dislike of Burton], Bill Evans, and Burton’s antecedents on vibes, Red Norvo and Lionel Hampton) make this a near irresistible book for a jazz nut like me. I liked also Burton’s account of his early years –when he started playing vibes, his father had to build a platform for him to stand on so he could reach the keys; in his early years as a performer, he played wherever he could and with whomever he could get a gig with. He idolized pianist Bill Evans (who didn’t?) but when they finally got together for a session, nothing worked: there was a discontinuity in the flow of their two separate musics, and the tapes had to be deep-sixed. Much later, someone –was it Eddie Gomez?—told him that the same thing had happened when other outside musicians had played with Evans’s trio. There was something about the way Evans and his cohorts phrased music that threw them off.A sizeable portion of the book is dedicated to describing Burton’s slow path to outing: he realized early that he was probably gay but jazz was not a career that supported a gay life so he buried his feelings, married twice, had kids, and only belatedly made public his inner feelings. Burton’s account of his emotional journey is heartfelt but it’s not what I was reading this book for, which was jazz. What he wrote was good, but what I was interested in reading about was his interactions with other musicians, his thoughts on music he plays, and the back story of his many recording sessions. In that respect, I was disappointed by one omission: there is no mention of his collaborations with German bassist-cellist Eberhard Weber. That’s my problem, not Burton’s: there are only so many things you can pack into a book, even a near-four hundred page one, but I would dearly have loved to read of Burton’s collaboration with this fabulously gifted and utterly unique artist. This is a good book, even a very good book, about jazz but it’s not a great book. But with one exception, Art Pepper’s account of his drug-ridden life, I don’t know of any jazz autobiography I would call great. It’s the books written about jazz masters by others that make it best –John Szwed on Sun Ra, Terry Teachout on Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, Robin Kelly’s masterful biography of Thelonious Monk. That’s what I’d like to see now: an empathetic and insightful biography of Gary Burton, master artist and, for a while in the late 60s and early 670s, cultural weathervane, and along with it, a study of the largely ignored question of what it was like to navigate an aggressively macho culture like performed jazz in the 50s through 7os (80S? … 90s?). It could make a heck of a book so why not do it before Burton leaves us?

Excellent book layout. Book truely design to inform, share and teach. What I learned while reading this book was one of the smartest moves Bill Gates made during his career was NOT transferring the copyrights into the operating system he and his partner delivered to IBM. The author did an excellent job of teaching the reader from lessons learned from Bill Gate's journey to the richest man in the world. They said his IQ is 160, I don't even know how you measure such a high IQ, but when you combine super intelligence with consistent efforts you get one of the richest men in the world.

The information is collected from various internet sources and even though the author does not have any special insights, but it is a nice summary and included some information I did not know. The author wrote about both successes and failures sounding impartial as he presents the information. Since I worked in computer industry all my life it gave me a nice look back on how we all grew up along with the industry.Ali Julia review

Nice to know more about Gates, an entrepreneur with great mix of invention skills and negotiation skills. How failure of Traf-O-Data ultimately served to help Gates and Aleen build their first Microsoft product a couple of years later is a message for all who feel defeated and want to give up the project in hand.A motivational book for aspiring entrepreneurs.

Received and read today. One of the most disappointing books I’ve ever purchased. Thought Bill Gates wrote it. If I wanted to read a biography of Gates I would have read his Wikipedia page. Book showed nothing of value, truly disappointed and feel the book was falsely advertised.

Not at all what I expected.Simple. Short. Read the sample and decide for yourself.I’m going to search for something HE wrote himself

I think 95% of informations I got from your book, I can find on Internet, but appreciate your effort for putting all that on a paper. Reading your book I found a lot of useful informations and advices I am willing to use in my life.Would gladly buy some others of your books

The biography was short and concise which made it easy to read. Though I do like the format of the chapters (story then key points) it would be nice to have an index at the end of all the key points and perhaps a suggestion of application into every day life. Overall I did enjoy the book.

Easily read, concise, no superfluous filler. I will definitely recommend this book. Keep up the good work, looking forward to Warren Buffet

This book is very helpful for me as a Christian that battles life long depression. I have tried countless medications, therapies, TMS, ECT and I'm still a mess. I was convinced that my life was a mistake and God didn't really care at all, just wishing I could die most of the time. This book has given me some hope that God does love and care about me and my son.

I am a doctor and have given this book to many patients with depression. Each has stated this book helps I also suffer from depression and it is hard to find books about depression written from a christian view who truly understand how difficult depression makes life

I bought this for my wife who suffers from Chronic Depression. She didn't have anything tragic happen to cause it, she's just always had chronic depression since she was a teenager. She said this book doesn't do a good job of admitting that chronic depression is real and that not everyone who is depressed are that way because of previous illness like cancer. It also uses a single study to suggest that medication isn't the solution, even though that goes against all the other science out there that says that medication along with counselling is the best solution for chronically depressed people. Sadly, this will be yet another book that fails to address chronic depression through a Christian Perspective. I guess I'll keep looking.

This book is super short but really profound. I think it's actually the perfect length for someone going through a dark spell with little motivation to read a long, dense book. I really liked that Piper gave depression the complexity it was due and didn't claim that all depression was sin related, yet still also offered hard, tangible truths that someone struggling could really hold on to. #JohnnyPipes4L

It has always seemed to me that John Piper, in many regards, understands depression or melancholy better than many pastors do. Perhaps it is because he has admitted his own tendencies to struggle through some dark nights. When the Darkness Will Not Lift (2006), a short, 79-page book that was originally appended to another book When I don't Desire God was a treatment he gave to the issue of melancholy. In classic style, Piper harkens back to those who have gone before him, particularly the Puritans, in understanding depression. In particular, he brings up the wise writings of Richard Baxter, John Bunyan, and John Newton, to name a few. Piper recognizes that older writers often have much to say about the Christian life.Piper has a particular way of knitting theology to life. He applies his understanding of the nature and character of God to the human condition. While this is a strength, I fear that many people, particularly in the throes of depression, may miss the application of theology to their daily life. Having said that, my desire is that more people would understand the importance of our thinking about God and how it can have a profound impact on how we live, even in the midst of darkness.

The darkness still hasn't lifted but I no longer feel alone and hopeless.

I think it was written with a lot of thought and backed up pretty consistently with Bible verses. Some very good points were made in this book, that to me, a depressed Christian, as I would put it, this gave me some Biblical, practical input on how to better deal with a lot of this. I think it's worth the money. Marc Trainor.

This book is a good starting place for those who want to learn the biblical stance on depression and what the church fathers have taught. I think Piper's emphasis on confession and obedience may be a little heavy for those currently struggling with depression, but, overall, the book is very helpful.

really enjoy it

I love this book. I know that many people were unhappy about the way that the pictures are printed but it is described on the cover that these are "botanical and scientific prints" so I feel that it was a fair and accurate description of the product. The only thing I would change is the thickness of he pages. You need to be careful when using "fineliner" pens so the ink won't bleed into the other side of the page. Other than that, this book is perfect!

Beautiful images. However not a whole lot left to color.. And as a plant junkie I found an error in a botanical name, but that is nothing in comparison to the lack of coloring I've done. I probably wouldn't recommend this to anyone just because there is nothing left to color..

The printing was very light, almost hard to see. I was expecting nice crisp dark lines not faded grey lines. Images are a nice selection. Would have liked to see a sample before I purchased it.

Just got this coloring book recently and I love it.I noticed that some people complained about the light lines, so I have a few bits of advice:- With darker colors, take your colored pencil, apply pressure to darken (burnish) the color pigment that lays on the paper and trace along the grey lines (for example, in the lemon drawing, press harder with a green pencil on the leaf lines).- Then, you may lightly go over the rest of the area in that color. Try using a colorless blender (which is essentially a pencil without pigment, just wax/oil) to smooth it out. This may lighten the color slightly, so layer over it again with your colored pencil. Doing this helps diminish the "grainy look".If your finished piece is something you want to display, don't forget to spray it with a workable fixatif to prevent any smudging.Personally I loved the octopus and seahorse pages the most, but they were all beautiful.

This is exactly what I had in mind when I was looking for adult coloring books. So many beautiful prints to color. Wonderful collection of vintage botanical and scientific prints. These are not complex renderings and don't take long to color. Although the paper is not heavy, it is heavy enough and once colored, the prints are suitable for framing. If you love doing color pencil work and botanical prints, then you can't go wrong with this purchase.

This is beautiful but not quite what I was expecting. It's not a coloring book in the traditional sense. Most of the pictures feature a great deal of detail and shading already so there's not much opportunity for adding your own color.

Too bad about this book - the illustrations are GORGEOUS - but as a coloring book it is disappointing because so many of the images are darkly colored already, in black ink. It is hard to add color. You can do it, but there isn't much room for your own artistic influence. Again, lovely images but too much shadowing/filler in black to allow for color addition in many cases.

These pictures are awesome! My husband and I love vintage looking things and wanted some wall art for our baby's room and this fit perfectly! We cut it to fit our frame and also cut the caption out of the book too and included it! I love that they all have captions! Other than those alterations we left it as it came. I saw some complaints about the lines being too light in color, but I disagree.
