Review of "Maiden Voyage" by Tania AebiThis is another autobiographical book about a teenager who sails around the world. The difference is in this one her father pushes her to do it because she is an aimless 18 year old living in NYC.The book isn't as detailed with the day by day journey as "One Girl One Dream" but does give nice summaries of certain days at sea. Especially her first knockdown (Wind forcing boat onto side) also when her 26 foot boat was hit by tanker in the Mediterranian sea. This book mostly covers the relationships she forms with 2 guys on her voyage, One named Luc and another named Olivier. The biggest problem I had with this book is the unexpected flashbacks to her childhood and in one area I had to read the section (where she flies home due to her mom being sick and dying) twice in order to get what was going on since the writing of that section was confusing.Over all this is a very good book but due to some confusing reading I can only give it 4/5 stars

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Although not instantly hooked in the beginning or even midway through, I stuck with it and ended up really enjoying Tania's story. The beginning is a bit choppy and the writing style takes some getting used to as Tania jumps back and forth between past/present and many details aren't revisited until later in the book. Initially, this frustrated me, but as I made my way through the book things came together more. What stuck with me the most was Tania's coming of age and growth during her journey. Here's a girl just 18 years old with no real direction in her life given the opportunity to take off and sail the world for 2 years. She has little sailing experience and an incredibly faulty engine, yet she perseveres and accomplishes something many can only dream of doing. She really matures and comes to terms with a lot throughout her journey and I loved reading about that. I guess confrontation with yourself is kind of inevitable when you're in the middle of the ocean all alone. While I loved this I did feel that the story was only told at surface level. Tania does divulge some details of her romance with Olivier and her rocky past with her parents, but I kept feeling like something was missing. I also kind of disliked Tania's father for most of the book - the whole voyage was his idea and it felt like he kind of pushed it on Tania as a way to live through her…it just didn't sit right with me.While this wasn't as good as another sailing memoir I read (Love With a Chance of Drowning) I still really enjoyed it and applaud Tania for such an amazing accomplishment.

It was my turn to recommend reading for nine members of my book club. I fondly recalled having read "Maiden Voyage," by Tania Aebi, over 30 years ago, and Amazon got me a soft cover copy just as they promised, in two days! The book itself is simply excellent. This unbelievably true story is very well written and well presented. No personal knowledge of, or even interest in sailing is necessary to fully and completely appreciate and enjoy the amazing and dangerous journey of this very courageous, young, 18 year old woman as she sailed all the way around the world -alone- in her sailboat. You will not regret the time spent with this wonderful, non-fiction, true account!

This is generally a well written book. I wondered who was most responsible for the quality, Aebi or the other gal. Sorry, I don't remember her name. The book is loaned out to a family member, I enjoyed it that much. It starts out, in a fairly dramatic fashion, with Tania nearing home port. And then the rest of the book goes back to the beginning and alternates between her adventures at sea and her family background. Initially I wished for more current-time and technical aspects of sailing, but I eventually relaxed into the story and enjoyed it for what it was. There's a wonderful thread about her difficulties reading a sextant. One of the impressive things about this book is her ability to craft a story that is interesting in and of itself and to bring to life some of the characters that she meets along the way. Some of the other youthful writers of solo-circumnavigation seem to lack the chops of the interpersonal. Jesse Martin being an example. Before he set out on his solo journey he crewed with a boat that had the owner and a couple of women on board. I was thinking that there could have been some interesting story-telling here, but all he seemed capable of saying was that the women were nice enough and that he was an abler sailor. Where's the beef? All in all a good read. Her father is ever so colorful. Her mother is a cypher. And god bless Tania for hanging in with mom. I tell you, after going through a few storms with Tania Aebi and some close encounters with passing freighters I think I'll stick to being an armchair enthusiast.

This is the third time that I have read Madden Voyage. Each time I pick up something that is different and more enlightening than the previous. I love this book and admire so much Tanya for doing what she did, especially at such a young age and of Olivier for his knowledge, adventurism and being a good husband. It would be wonderful if we could find out where they are now to follow through with their position in life. Thank you, Ron, ronjohn995@gmail.com
