Review

“The takeaway of Debaise’s careful analysis is a robust and persuasive understanding of the ontology of affect, and affect as valuation–the feeling of the world in its allness and being moved by it according to what is of interest and importance to the societies we are and are becoming.” (M. Gail Hamner affecognitive 2018-01-19)"As Debaise puts it: 'What is needed is a philosophy that, in its very form, its ambition and its manners of relating to things, can grant due importance to the deeply plural experience of nature.' This is the philosophy to which Debaise has opened us in his reading of Whitehead." (Patricia Ticineto Clough Critical Inquiry 2018-04-01)

Review

"Nature as Event is a remarkable rendering of Whitehead's most difficult points of philosophy. With his slow, light, and extremely clever touch, Didier Debaise has a unique ability to make speculative philosophy understandable to everybody, artists as well as social scientists and humanists. One will never find another book that makes the notion of the 'eternal object' commonsensical. A great read." (Bruno Latour, author of An Inquiry into Modes of Existence: An Anthropology of the Moderns)“This remarkable book may serve as an introduction to Whitehead's thought due to its brevity, beautiful clarity, and quality of its argumentation. But it is much more than that: it is a very original and thought-provoking contribution to philosophy and humanities that is motivated by the concerns of our time. Didier Debaise renders the thorniest questions intelligible and characterizes concepts in such a way that readers feel each concept intensifying an aspect of their experience. A deeply rewarding book.” (Isabelle Stengers, author of In Catastrophic Times: Resisting the Coming Barbarism)

During the 80s and 90s, Nature was declared at its death, end, or just troubled by various academics writing from privileged positions. Subsequently, the mashing of nature and culture, or the deconstructions of its alleged dualism, or the monadic collapsing of them turned out to be a growth industry, particularly in the humanities but also elsewhere in academia. As an aside, I wonder how many 'ordinary' everyday people think Nature is dead.......troubled, yes, certainly! Ended? Hmmm! Debaise sees otherwise, particular through his account of bifurcation that interrogates the operative basis and function of dualist and monist conceptions of nature. Why then a 'turn' in 'new' theory to 'non' anthropocentrism, 'non/more-than human' and renewed speculations about ontology, realism, and materialism? What the hell is going on in postmodern 'intellectual' work and associated 'movements' in and of (western) thought?Debaise's very readable, short book is well worth reading as a 'thought' responsive to some of these academic and existential dilemmas, (and others such as the uncritical acceptance in the mainly North American academy of the increasingly populist 'posthuman'), as is his related speculative empiricism (2017). The Debaise text is relatively easy reading and interprets Whitehead in an accessible and interesting manner. His views on nature, as event and plural, warrant attention and debate, as does his account of the subjectivity of feelings as a quality of the intensification of experience...hence his somewhat pragmatic speculative empiricism.More might have been made of Dewey but, with a careful interpretation and helpful pedagogy of the real, the ordinary everyday person on the street would also find "Nature as event' as an al(luring) possibility.

Great book!!!!
