This book is REALLY NOT about OLD souls. It's a study of Ian Stevenson's work. He wrote one of the first detailed studies of what seems to be proof of reincarnation. One book called something like "Twenty Cases Suggestive of Reincarnation" and "Children Who Remember Previous Lives." He went to India, Thailand, Burma and other countries where there were children born into families that started saying as soon as they could talk, that these parents were not their real parents. This fellow rode around with Ian and reports in detail what he saw, heard and learned.Ian Stevenson used the most exacting and demanding methodology that he could manage. I really enjoyed this book! But the souls that were reborn seemed rather YOUNG. Just jumping back into a body not long after they suffered a violent death. That is, I have ideas about what OLD souls are—people that have lived through many many lives and have grown wise. To jump right into some new baby's body soon after your death is not so wise! But that does not take away from what the book teaches you.

Whether or not you're "into" past lives, this is a good read. Rather than concentrating on long transcripts of hypnotized patients, this book concentrates on the work of Ian Stevenson. Dr Stevenson has devoted his time to interviewing children who began to talk about a recent life that they lived just before this one. He does this work exclusively because of the difficulty of being certain that the hypnotized person isn't just trying to please the hypnotist. Also, very young children cannot have read articles about their supposed past lives, cannot have ulterior motives for saying they have lived before, nor anyway to fake remembering the people and places they remember. It'd fascinating reading, although I could have done with less complaining about the difficulties of getting around in Lebanon and India.

If you are looking for a book of detailed cases of reincarnation, this is NOT the right book. This has VERY LITTLE information about actual reincarnation cases. This book is the story of Schroder, who goes along with a man who is following up on reincarnation cases. It is basically him describing just the conditions surrounding those trips, NOT the actual cases of reincarnation. HUGE let down. He talks about the streets, the buildings and the driving for 90% of the book.

Amazing stories of children in Beirut, Lebanon and various parts of India who remembered their past lives - many of whose former families were alive. The children were able to identify their former families by name, and other amazing details of their connections, which would seem most unlikely unless they were who they said they were - i.e,, children from those families who had died, and been reborn in neighboring villages.I have known about Ian Stevenson's work for a long time, but the account by this journalist who accompanied him on his last trips to Beirut and India made the stories more interesting to read, while at the same time upholding the research standards that Stevenson required.

Thomas Shroder writes with such descriptives you feel as if you are beside him and seeing the places first hand. There is such honesty in his words as well that the second part of book concerning India left me depressed by the visuals I conjured from his descriptions of the communities. Its a book Id love the world to read because it doesn't try to demand you believe - it simply presents facts that leaves you feeling that 'something is still missing' and knowing that what 'is missing 'can only be found on a deeply personal level within yourself by seeking the truth.Shroder gives you choices, opens a door you can choose or deny to enter. He asks questions you ask yourself and he answers them without demanding you accept his opinions or views. He makes Ian Stevenson a personal friend and associate to the readers. I fell united with them both and I truly hope he continues his research in these areas and shares more of his beautifully written works with the world.

First, I have to say that several of the reviewers have said that somewhere on the cover it was stated that this book provided PROOF of reincarnation, and they then rated this book poorly for not providing such iron-clad proof. After reading these reviews, I studied the cover once again, trying to find where it states that any proof will be given - yet, there's no such statement ANYWHERE! What it states is that they will provide "compelling evidence" - and in my opinion they have achieved this goal."Old Souls" discusses some of those cases suggestive of reincarnation that Dr. Ian Stephenson had investigated during his career. These cases are found all over the world, but this book tends to discuss only those found in Lebanon, India, and a few in the US. Much of the info. provided tends to be clinical in a sense, but one has to remember that Dr. Stephenson is trying to pursue this from a scientific point of view - in an effort to bring this sort of research into the mainstream. The author, Thomas Shroder, is a journalist skeptic who followed Dr. Stephenson on the last few of his journeys. I must say that it's hard at times to read how the skeptics view the evidence, as it seems to show without a doubt the saying that believers don't need extraordinary proof, but to the skeptic, no proof is good enough. However, by the end, this skeptic was at least left wondering - not willing to deny everything he saw and heard - at least thats a start...Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in spirituality in general, and more specifically reincarnation. It provides an excellent view into the research, and how & why the skeptics tend to rip it apart.
