My daughter is 5 (almost 6) and has Tourette Syndrome. I bought this book for her classroom for when she started school in a few months. I decided to read it to her and her 3 year old brother when he started becoming irritated with her tics. While the book is very informative, it was not for us. It upset my daughter because talking about tics made her have to tic. It also seemed to introduce concepts that she had never thought of before. I tried to skip over them, but realized it was throughout the whole book. Things like "I'm not weird" "please don't make fun of me", etc. While I know why they are put in there, for the younger kids that haven't experienced this, it introduces a whole new set of things to be scared of before starting school. She never thought she was weird, and no one has made fun of her, so putting that in her head wouldn't help the anxiety she is feeling about going to class. It also stated that tics don't hurt, when some of my daughter's tics do hurt her, whether it is from muscle pain (whiplash tic) or her distonic tics than can be painful. I think it is a great book, but I also think it is more suited for slightly older children than mine. Since every case of Tourette's is different, it is hard to find a book that fits individual needs. I will continue looking for a book that we can hopefully share with her class.
I cannot say enough positive about this book on Tourette syndrome. My son has Tourette’s syndrome and has been experiencing some issues at his school with peers. I bought this book for him to read at home but ended up taking it to his school and reading it to his fourth grade class. After I read this book, the children responded wonderfully and sincerely empathized and changed their behaviors toward my son . Education is key, and this is the perfect book to educate children and adults, including Educators!!!
I purchased this book to use during a lesson on Tourette Syndrome I was teaching to first graders, to help them understand the condition one of their classmates has. It was an excellent adjunct to my lesson. I did skip the page regarding medication since this child's family has not chosen that for him at this point. Otherwise the book is very helpful and child friendly as are many of the books in the "Special Kids in School" series (by various authors). One note for anyone introducing this book and attempting to talk about tics with this age group, some of the children may decide that they have Tourette's since some in my audience who have or have had transient tics felt so comfortable with the idea of Tourette Syndrome, they insisted they also have it. It was interesting trying to describe diagnostic differences to six year olds! That said, I was very happy to be able to use this book.
The information was fine. My major concern was the fact that I had to remove the binding staples and put the book together in the correct order. As I am sure this was not assembled by hand, others will have the same problem.When one purchases a book, they expect it to be in the correct order. Makes the story hard to follow when it’s not. 😠thank goodness it wasn’t a super long book!
I like this book a lot; it is one of the better ones in the series. All of the books in the series have Teacher Tips and resources as well as a quiz, these are always helpful. The text is simple and easy for kids to understand. I worked with a student who had Tourettes and we read this to his second grade class. It was easy for them to understand and generated some good questions. It gave his classmates a nice idea of what he dealt with each day and how hard it might be for him.
A student of mine who has Tourette Syndrome sent this book into school. We read it to the class. It was very clear and helpful. I then ordered two copies- one for the classroom and one for home.
This book was perfect for sharing with my sons class
My son was having problems at the beginning of his 1st grade year, becuase of his tics & Tourettes. The kids didn't understand him and were making fun of him. I brought this book in and read it to the class, and it was great. They got to ask questions and they had tons!! I highly recommend this book!!!
