This book was extremely difficult to read. The author is obviously not a writer. I make it a practice to complete every book I start. Doing so in this case, however, was truly a challenge. Although the book is about Ms. Atkins, it seems to be as much about the scores of people she became involved with in her espionage work. What makes the book so difficult to read is the author's writing style, which is basically just a hodgepodge of miscellaneous anecdotes about events and people which often seem totally unconnected to the paragraph before or the paragraph that follows. You often wonder why he even mentions them at all, and you often feel lost. You read some paragraphs and have to wonder what he's saying, even after you've read it a second time. You get the impression that the writer, who obviously had tens of thousands of facts at his disposal about WWII British espionage, is trying to impress the reader with the breadth of his knowledge of the subject. In doing so, however, he seems to have put on paper whatever facts popped into his head at a given moment. The relevance of those facts often escapes the reader, who would need the writer's knowledge of the subject to follow what he is trying to say. Perhaps it is an intellectual deficiency on my part, but I suspect that the vast majority of people reading this book will find it unreadable. Ms. Atkins was a remarkable woman. Fortunately, there is another book about Ms. Atkins that I'm currently reading that is far more readable and enjoyable, and provides a much better portrait of this very complicated woman. The title is "A Life in Secrets - Vera Atkins and the Missing Agents of World War II."

It is not very often that I do not finish a book but this one is going to be one of the few. This sounds like an interesting book. But in reality it is so badly written, very disjointed and has no supporting documentation. I felt as if he wrote it in a hurry. I dread to think what the book on Entebbe is like as that was written in a week. I am not sure who the editor was but they should have been fired.This subject could have been such an exciting read but it is impossible to follow the story line. The author assumes we all know & understand what he's talking about. He has no real explanations about all the different departments, other than a long boring list which makes for hard reading and by the time you start the book you have forgotten what the initials stand for.The book portrays the English as a bunch of Hooray Henry's which I am sure there were some but not every man in the UK is a bumbling idiot. Nor were the English pro Hitler except for a select few aristocrats. It is true the English did not want to go back to war. Who would after the devastation of WWI. I have read 37% but I can go no further. I shall not read more of his books.

If you have a broad and deep knowledge of European politics, and various notable people from the WWI through WWII years, then you may find this book a fascinating weaving together of covert and known history during that time. I regret I am not that audience. I'm a neophyte in my knowledge of the era, having only a singular college history class along with a few documentaries and biographies of notable people who lived then as my knowledge base.I forced my way through about half this book, taking frequent pauses to google things mentioned quickly but not explained or elaborated upon. After 3 months, I have quit trying. Ironically, this book has been more effective for curing insomnia than it has been in educating or entertaining me. I had far more enjoyment and learning in the various articles and documentaries I've watched trying to learn enough to follow one chapter of this author's rambling and abstruse recounting of names, facts, and dates, than I've enjoyed a single page of this book. Wait, the opening part of the little boy on the bike delivering Vera a message did engage me. I purchased the book after reading it as a preview. I was disappointed that after the vingnette, we never heard about him again.Reluctantly I must agree with other reviewers who've said reading this is like listening to a six-year old give a chronological recounting of a long documentary; unless you have first hand knowledge, prepare yourself for a challenge. My question is where is the editor who should have helped the historian hone in on a narrative line within which to wrap all this information more effectively for the audience?

I agree with many of the other 1-star reviews about the writing, but wanted to add a couple of other specific criticisms. The problems with the text are not simply an issue of writing style, but rather there is a persistent absence of logical thought or any organization to the information presented, in addition to the choppy style and awkwardly constructed sentences. This lack of logical organization results in a lack of context for much of the information. His paragraphs start with one random thought and wander to other, disconnected thoughts from there. At a finer grain in the text, most sentences that contain any structure beyond simple subject-verb-object are themselves disjointed and hard to decipher: the antecedent of a personal pronoun is often two or three names earlier, not the nearest one, or there will be a run of pronouns with a convoluted order of antecedents. The publishers should be ashamed of themselves for the obvious lack of any serious editing of this book.I find the European part of WWII very interesting and this particular subject area particularly interesting; I assumed I could blast through any bad writing, but I simply can't figure out what his point is more than half the time. "Incoherent" is the summary word I would use for this extremely unsatisfactory text. Unlike some reviewers who feel they have to finish every book they start, I feel that life is much too short and I have too much I want to do and experience to waste time on writing such as in this book--I'm quitting at 16% (Kindle).

Too often, it seems like lawyers have a vested interest in letting contentious divorces drag on, whereas coaches and mediators can help warring parties come more quickly to reasonable solutions that everyone can live with. I found the chapter on Guilt-free parenting, and parenting teens particularly reassuring, especially as the authors are both the products of divorced backgrounds and blended families themselves, and I liked the question and answer format of the book, and the helpful list of resources at the end of each chapter,This book is essential reading for anyone with children who is contemplating divorce, and who needs a guidebook on what they need to think about, and who to turn to, at a time when they might otherwise feel lost and in desperate need of support.

I practiced family law for 35 years and retired as a Magistrate Judge in Domestic Relations Court. It was heartbreaking to witness the devastation to children when parents could not agree with each other or prioritize their children. Putting Kids First makes clear that it is essential to prioritize the needs of kids no matter how much the divorcing couple disagrees on any other matters. I think the single greatest contribution to this change is expanding the support in the family law system to include professionals other than lawyers, who sometimes are too single-minded about what they perceive to be their clients interests. In particular, the role of the divorce coach can be essential for those needing non-legal non-therapeutic support that is both practical and timely. You do not need to be a lawyer or a therapist to help people understand the impact of their mindset now upon their children's future. The idea that we can support people in divorce, through coaching, gives me great hope that the individuals experiencing divorce and their children will be well-served. Surely, the other professionals play an important role but having an objective person stand beside you as you make decisions that will impact you and your children for life is a game changer. I recommend that individuals in divorce read this book and find a coach who is a good fit for you.

I turned to “Putting Kids First in Divorce” when friends were in the midst of an anguishing divorce. Despite their loving, caring, rationale approach to parenting, the rupture within their family was, predictably, profound. For young children, especially, family—whether legally in tact or not—is a primary source of identity, trust and confidence. The contributors to this book make a solid case for seeking qualified professionals, such as mediators, psychologist and divorce coaches, whose expertise can lead divorcing couples to keep their children’s well-being the center of their focus.

I am a divorce attorney and I read this book to help me guide my clients and to confirm that it is something to recommend to them. The book starts with a discussion of how the way you approach your divorce can have a big impact in the outcome. While I would make a lot more money if I litigated cases constantly, I treat litigation as a last resort. To me the majority of couples are able to come to agreements regarding their divorce if they have a mediator involved or sometimes just attorneys on both sides of the case who are geared towards settlement and not so much towards maximizing the payout for the client.Parents who have already decided to approach their divorce through mediation may choose to skip to chapter 3 but the first two chapters can still serve as a helpful reminder of why they are focused on a resolution outside of court. The book then moves into the psychology of co-parenting and the various ways that the approach taken by parents can significantly impact the amount of harm that children experience in the process. I quite like how the various mediators and other professionals interviewed in the book discuss that they no longer believe that it is as simple as saying that every divorce harms children, but that sometimes a careful approach to the process can make it so positive that it is better than subjecting the children to parents who fight all the time. Many of the professionals interviewed in the book consider this alternative approach to involve a mediator or a divorce coach. I often refer my clients to mediators and I think this is usually a good step when children are involved. The chapters feel like reading the transcript from a podcast, which I like because it maintains that personal feel.Later chapters address a number practical tips. Suggestions range from the big picture approach to the the divorce process to the boundaries that are important between the two parents and the things you should and shouldn't say to your children through the process. Each of these has examples so that can be immediately applied. Some chapters explain just how you might speak to the children about what led to the breakdown of the relationship without sharing adult issues with them. Overall, one theme I see in all the chapters is the importance of recognizing that once you are going through divorce it is not appropriate to attack the other parent but that providing the most positive environment for the children is your highest priority. Chapter 8 makes a great handbook for discussing big issues with your children while keeping everything positive.I also appreciate Chapter 9's inclusion and the recognition that some people reading this book may be considering divorce but not yet so fully decided that they have given up all hope. Though some of the tips provided in Chapter 9 may not be able to help a couple that is beyond repair, reading through those ideas can help increase the chances of the next relationship avoiding the same pitfalls.I have already recommended the book to one of my clients and I expect I will regularly continue to do so going forward as I work with clients who have children. Even those who enter into the divorce with the best of intentions may not be aware of the damage they can do by off-the-cuff remarks or subtle suggestions that they still blame the other parent for all of the problems.

An entire chapter is devoted to York tubas, another to Jacobs' studio through the years, and another to biographies of all the conductors of the Chicago Symphony including major guest conductors. There is even a sub-chapter on every renovation Chicago's Orchestra Hall received during Jacobs' tenure. The lists and detailed information go on and on. Frederiksen has not only managed to capture the essence of one of the greatest musicians to influence generations of brass performers, but he also provided a truly meaningful historical perspective and backdrop to Jacobs' career.Another facet of this book that is most gratifying to this reviewer is the careful research and documentation of the information Frederiksen was able to collect. The author providing over 20 pages of end notes, each referenced with the exact primary source consulted. The bibliography alone is eight pages long. The minutiae about other people and situations sometimes have doubtful usefulness, even to historians. There is also some problem with transition and continuity, resulting in a somewhat choppy flow. About the Author

Brian Frederiksen was born into a family of flute players as his mother and aunt were the flute section of the Albany (NY) Symphony. Eventually, he began playing the tuba when eleven years old. He he graduated from the Interlochen Arts Academy, the American Conservatory in Chicago (BM), and Northwestern University (MM). During his studies in Chicago beginning in 1973, he started a long relationship with Arnold Jacobs. Besides being the legendary tubist of the Chicago Symphony (1944-1988), Jacobs was the teacher recognized as the expert on breathing for wind instruments. During twenty-five years with Mr. Jacobs, Mr. Frederiksen was a student and then his assistant with masterclasses, first at Northwestern University and then throughout the country. He wrote Arnold Jacobs: Song and Wind, and formed WindSong Press Ltd. carrying books, CDs, music and breathing devices. After Mr. Jacobs passed away, he worked with the Jacobs family to preserve the Jacobs legacy for future research by creating the Arnold and Gizella Jacobs Collection. windsongpress.com was created as the web s most complete source about Arnold Jacobs. I’ve bought this book about 5 times for my students - as a brass teacher, I think it is a must read for high-school and university music students who play any brass instrument. I have a bit of an issue with the way the book is laid out. I feel that the pedagogical info should be up front and the Jake stories later.

As a bassoonist, only about a third of this book was specifically applicable to breathing technique for wind instruments, though this advice is first class. Highly encourage any wind player to check it out. The rest was interesting from a musical history standpoint.

Purchased for my son who is a tubist at Towson. He is a music major and loves Arnold Jacobs. He really liked this book.

Arnold Jacobs is still a legend, whose name, even in 2018, is still spoken in hushed tones among musicians all over the world. This book is a loving tribute to a great man!

This should be a “must read” for any musician!

I found this book very helpful in the concepts that were taught. It is obvious that nothing would compare to what Arnold Jacobs would teach in a private lesson, but I feel that this book fulfills its purpose in giving the basic ideas of his teachings and what his life was like. Great book, I would recommend it to others to read.

Great book! Great insights! It's said that because so many musicians studied with Jacobs that by extension, we've all studied with him. If you read this book you'll help extend that learning tree even further.
