#17,603 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Why I bought it? Because of the media hype, everyone seemed to be talking about it. I decided to join the bandwagon (I am a casual reader that too). I really wanted to like it but I really could not.Strengths:- The storyline was alright, made you want to continue reading on though the Weaknesses (below) made me want to stop in between. Many times. Many many times.- It seemed the author tried to co-relate some of these to current nuances and situations of political strife which was sometimes interesting.Weaknesses:- Typos galore - I don't know if the onus of this lies with the Kindle interpretation or the author but I literally got tired of highlighting the issues I found in this book. I mean I was reading it through Kindle and what started as a joke of highlighting some typos turned into a much bigger deal as that just didn't stop- Character development - I am literally your average reader and I didn't expect a Pulitzer level of writing here. Shiva's character and behavior of many others lacked the maturity of an average adult. Shiva is shown as a human, a mortal, so understandably his behavior was expected to be like other mortals. But making him sound like a teenager with his 'Oh man' type of reactions made the book feel really really light on the literary experience. Other characters talking like they are friends in a 2005 soap opera had me shaking my head all through the book.

This book is...different. I don't even know what category to put it in. It was recommended to me by a friend in India as a popular Indian science fiction trilogy. However, I do not think it qualifies as science fiction, at least in this first book. The novel is a pretty good read though and definitely a look at the world through a non-western lens. I am learning a lot about Hindu mythology, although I am not sure what is part of the standard mythology and what is the novel's own invention. In Immortals of Meluha, one of the main Hindu gods, Shiva, is actually a mortal human and chieftain of a small tribe in Tibet. He and his tribe are invited by the Meluhans to immigrate into their country, which is peaceful and prosperous, unlike the area where Shiva is from where his tribe is constantly waring with neighboring tribes and struggling for survival. Once they reach Meluha, each member of the tribe is given a medicine which rids them off all illness and confers virtual immortality. In addition, Shiva develops a blue throat indicating that he is of special importance to the Meluhans. A prophecy indicates that he will deliver them from their enemies. At this point, Shiva is not a god, he's just a regular guy trying to deal with a new culture that has huge expectations of him. The basic question facing him is what is the difference between good and evil? There are some science fictiony aspects. The Meluhans, while just entering the bronze age, seem to have very sophisticated knowledge of medicine and chemistry. They understand anti-oxidants, for instance. They don't have gun powder or even crossbows, but there is some reference to divine weapons that could even be nuclear.I'm going to read the next book. I'm interested in where this is going.

The fascinating start of the Shiva trilogy that keeps you going until you "unfortunately" reach the end and you wonder why you did not get # 2 book! Not only a very addictive thriller, but so well done with Indian philosophy, geography etc... and a story line that plays a movie in your mind. The writing style is very flowery and very Indian and flavorful even though sometimes you read a discrepancy between the old times when it takes place and the current language that we hear nowadays. But you take to it. The heroes become YOUR heroes and friends, you understand the choices they are confronted with and you have no other way but think about your own life and own choices in your own world and time. This is very well done. And I would actually recommend it to all those who study yoga, Indian civilization and culture because this comes out of this culture. Even those who are tickled by a natural curiosity about India may want to delve into this trilogy.Enjoy with all your heart!

Great Idea! But very corny and tacky writing! Giving two stars for just the idea. The book would have been good if the writing was not so mediocre and full of cliches. 'Oh holy lake!' if only the writer had been less lazy and spent more time doing due diligence to the entire prewriting process, he might have had a better book on his hands.. and ours too??

As someone said earlier...this story grows on you. When I started reading initial chapters ..I kind of hated it.The language and sentences used were very obvious and boring. Also as author tried to narrate Indian mythology in modern context you find it hard to accept the story. We Indians have heard mythology in older context and this is something contradicting and sound absurd. For Example..Gods are suppose to know everything...and its difficult to accept story about SHIVE internal struggles. However in 2nd half the book picks up very well...the first half was more of build-up and the 2nd is what I really enjoyed. There are few parts of story that really touch heart. My favr scene was the short interaction of SHIVA with old begger in Ayodha who offer his food to Lord Shiva. Many very good examples where author integrated mythological beliefs into story and explained old myths in scientific way. Like concept of Soma Rass. Advance readers might find story telling bit weak...but its a must read in my opinion. lastly this doesn't propagate Hindu religion but it beautifully describes goodness of Indian Mythology....things that my Grand-mom used to describe. Loved the way Rama character was describes. jai Sri Ram!!!Amazon...the next 2 books not available in Kindle format????
