This book was written to be a companion to the Steven Spielberg Film, Lincoln, currently in theaters. It focuses on the sixteenth president's tumultuous final months in office. Ending slavery was his primary focus. Even if you are not able to go see the movie, you have an abundance of historical detail right in this book.Be advised this is not a comprehensive biography of President Lincoln. It puts a microscope on his struggle to weigh his personal beliefs against presidential duties concerning the slavery issue. The Emancipation Proclamation issued two years earlier only authorized Union soldiers to liberate slaves in the south. A Constitutional amendment was needed to legally end slavery forever in the United States. The book tells us about America during those tumultuous times, Congress, and the people who fought or helped Lincoln.Although intended for young adult readers, the book is well suited for adults as well. Photographs spanning Lincoln's life, speeches, a chronology, and cast of characters are included. Another nice perk is the large type size.Here is an interesting aside. When Steven Spielberg, director of the movie, interviewed historical scholars prior to writing the screenplay, he took notes using an inkwell and fountain pens in order to place himself into that historical period. I watched the movie, "Lincoln" and this book fills in the gaps from the movie. It is a really interesting read, and I really enjoyed the insights you get from the movie and book! Everyone should read this to understand why Lincoln is considered the best President ever.

Love Lincoln stories wherever they are written. This is digging in to the facts of the end of slavery. It is written for a middle school child. I will offer it to one i know when they are old enough.

I thought I knew a lot about Lincoln, but I learned so much more from this book. I wish I had it before seeing the movie.The book and the movie put emphasis on the 13th Amendment with the Emancipation Proclamation a document proclaiming what needed to happen; not an instrument that would end slavery.

I splurged and purchased the genuine calfskin edition and I am so happy I did! It is exquisite in construction and quality. I envision years of daily use because no expense was spared in the design and construction of this Bible. Further, the layout is highly logical and useable. This Bible opens up the Jewishness of our history, especially in a Scriptural and Hebrew Worldview perspective. This is so terribly important because without accurate Hebrew worldview, culture, language, and lands knowledge one cannot really understand what is being said or instructed. As a pastor, it is my responsibility to accurately present not only the Word, but what the Word really means! This Study Bible truly provides an extraordinary resource for not only pastors, but for every person who reveres and wants to better understand God's Word.

I wonder how common this sentiment is among Chinese who come to America, realizing that however much they love their country, its culture, and its people, their government and its policies and propaganda are pretty messed up.I will probably never have the opportunity to travel to China. Even if I do, I am sure I will not have the opportunity to build relationships over time with Chinese neighbors the way Schmitz has. In short, this is the best book I've read this year.I received it the night before a flight to Shanghai, and today I had the chance to visit the street of eternal happiness. As someone who was born and raised in Shanghai, I find myself rediscover this street like for the first time, even though I have been there countless number of times.What Mr. Schmitz did very well here is that he just plays a role of someone who observes and let the main characters develop their own stories, one can barely notice him, yet he is putting all these together in this remarkable book.I was at CK's sandwich store today, unable to find CK himself because he was on other assignments (I was told he is having concerts, which, if it is true, doesn't really surprise me because of the fact that he once chose one of Liszt's most famous and difficult pieces to get a job). When I introduced this book to the waitress, she couldn't believe that a complete book is dedicated to such a small street, how can someone write so much for our street?! There's a bookshelf in the store, unfortunately I didn't see this book, I wish I had brought a second copy today so I could leave one there. From my conversation with the waitress and the chef, I have the feeling that they probably know nothing about CK's story, and for all the office workers having quick lunch today, this is just a restaurant like all others.Except that Mr. Schmitz's book reminds me that it is not, just like all other stories in this book, story like this matters, history matters, a celebration of Chinese life, far from perfect, but it's real.I feel very fortunate that in today's world there's still journalist like Mr. Schmitz who is working hard to record the history of ordinary people and to preserve the oral history happened in places lost almost in every other platforms.

My Russian emigre parents and I, as a very young child, lived at 698 Changle Lu, House #1, before my family was able to migrate to Australia in 1950, so I will be buying an extra copy of this book to give to my 95 year old mother. She will enjoy this charming look at the lives of the current residents of a pretty tree lined part of the old French Concession, where I have been fortunate to visit several times, although next time I shall bring this book with me. What I appreciate so much is Rob Schmitz's great humanity in telling these stories and his understanding of the differences in culture between his Chinese neighbors and the West. He is not at all judgmental, but at all times sensitive to the feelings of the people who have entrusted him with their life stories. China is changing with great speed and becoming more and more like anywhere else, so it is wonderful to have a snapshot of Chinese lives at this particular point in time, with its finely tuned ear to the differences between country and city and even between separate parts of this vast land. This is a heartfelt and sympathetic portrait which still displays without flinching the difficulties that still exist.

This is a well written book catered specifically to MBA students. But it is definitely watered-down. This is definitely an MicroEconomics 101 level book and involves nothing more than utilizing basic arithematic. If you want a quantatitively rigorous (Calculus and stats) Microeconomics text book that has many mathematical formulas, derivatives, and problems, then this book is does not fit that bill. If you are looking for Microeconomics Light, then this book is as good as any.My main problem with this book is its lack of quantitative analysis problems and their solutions. Almost every problem at the end of each chapter is conceptual and involves no mathematical calculations. I also think this book can use a CD with Excel spreadsheets and examples on how we can use data to calculate where MC=MR based on P vs Q and VC vs Q data, for example.But that would mean doing something quantitative which this book seems to avoid at all costs.The best part of this book is its extremely well crafted graphs and their explanations. I would say they are worth the price of this book. If you can understand the graphs and their explanations, you have understood most of the contents of this book.I would give this book 3.5 stars. It does a great job of explaining microeconomics concepts, but without the rigorous mathematical explanations that may baffle some readers. Nevertheless, its strength also hinders it from becoming a more rigorous and thought provoking book.

This book is a disappointment for me. The book is not cohesive enough, and the explanations for illustrations are not written very well. I don't recommend it for using to teach classes. It needs to be planned out better. The authors explain some things well, but I think they need some more editing to make things more concise and less redundant.

This book gives me excellent ideas to be used by me as modern manager. Both basic funda and today's problems of managerial economics are very well explained. Though I am not a manager of modern days, I am able to understand the themes given in the book.Service delivery by amazon and its partners are excellent.

This book is amazing. I qppreciate the effort the author made to make the subject of microecon as interesting as possible.

Something about this book really clicked with my 6-year-old - she's a somewhat reluctant reader, but wants to read this one again and again! We had gotten it from the library, but because of how much she loved it, I finally ordered the book. Sweet story that exposes children to the struggles of kids around the world in a very gentle way. Wonderful book!

My 7 year old daughter loves this book and has read it several times since it arrived. This had been a great conversation starter about life in more oppressive countries and what it might be like to be a child in Afghanistan. Recommended for any 1st or 2nd grade classroom.

A glimpse of life in a troubled part of the world. Best, I would think, for informed children at least 9 or so as it is a difficult life for the subjects, with parental loss involved.Education's benefit illustrated.

I used this story in my 7th grade classroom as a tool for helping students identify problems and solutions. This book was a quick read for them and they were able to understand the story and the skill. They all really enjoyed the book and it had them generate a lot of questions about the outside world!

This was a good story. Somewhat of a tearjerker. Such a short story but with such a big impact. I purchased the book to find out what it was about since my son's third-grade class was going to be reading it together.

I watch the morning news while getting ready for work. While with me during those morning routines, my first-grader had many questions I did not feel I could adequately and appropriately answer. This is a terrific book for introducing the idea to elementary school children, foreign and horrible as it may be, that there are places where going to school is dangerous. In addition to planting the seeds of appreciation for her own education and her luck in being born when/where she was, the idea of being able to defy evil by learning to read is very exciting. There is also a girl and her grandmother who are not helpless after being left alone when her parents disappear. That part of the story was not nearly as scary to her as I thought it would be. In subtext, the fear of the "bad guys" is offset by the others who endanger themselves to allow the school to succeed and the students to be safe. This is a terrific book that I will start giving as a gift to my elementary-aged friends and relatives.

This has been a difficult review to write. How can one express their reading of St. Therese of Lisieux as enjoyable, when this young Saint experienced such incredible pain? Lived her short life in extreme agony, yet welcomed each moment of pain as a gift from God? Here was a young woman, who was determined to become a saint! Yes, I very much enjoyed reading this text. I would highly recommend others to purchase this translation by John Clarke O.C.D., as he brings much of what has been written before about St. Therese into chronological clarity. In fact, I would have enjoyed having this particular text before having read others on St. Therese. There is a great wealth of information included within this text that is not seen in others.Not only has John Clarke offered chronological clarity, photographs, and a biographical guide offering proper names/description of those mentioned within the text; John Clarke, O.C.D. offers a Biblical Index along with the 'normal' index found in most text. The Biblical Index brings the reader even closer to St. Therese. Here one may bring themselves to a greater understanding of that immense Love St. Therese of Lisieux had for our Lord. For those who wish to study the life of St. Therese further, I would highly recommend this awe-inspiring text.This text is offered by ICS Publications (Institute of Carmelite Studies), Washington, D.C. There are several other texts available from the ICS Publications on St. Therese of Lisieux. Inside, on the very last page, there is a small paragraph on the Institute of Carmelite Studies with addresses for those who may be interested in the Discalced Carmelite way of life.

I was in a traditional Carmelite monastery in PA for four and a half years and this was one of the must-reads there. The sub-prioress who is named after this most beautiful saint, said that it was her favorite book on Saint Therese by far. It's the kind you can pickup on any page and is especially good for meditation. I definitely recommend anyone looking at this to buy it!

This kindle edition is missing random words, which makes the reader have to guess at the meaning of sentences. Not acceptable in a copy straight from the publisher.

This book is a one-of-a-kind book. I am re-reading it, one entry a day, for personal growth. There is no other book to compare.

I have been involved in helping create environments inside Catholic structures that foster the "New Evangelization" for nearly 15 years. My experience has been with parishes and lay apostolates. The lack of good models to copy is frustrating. Divine Renovation might be the best book I have read for practical implementation of proven best practices. It is a must read for anyone who hopes to see their parish implement the reforms Pope Francis calls for in Evangelii Gaudium, and move from maintenance to missionary discipleship. I found this book to be more helpful than many of the popular Catholic best sellers on this topic. Father Mallon's highly intentional (and successful) focus on the encounter piece (personal friendship with Jesus) is what differentiates this book from others like it. Rebuilding a parish without a highly intentional focus on encountering Jesus in the power of the Holy Spirit is like building a house on sand (Matthew 7:26). Buy as many copies as you can and give them away!!

Exactly what needs to be talked about in our parishes and dioceses. This isn't about being conservative or liberal. This book is about being missionary. It's about living out the Great Commission. This needs to be the vision for our parishes. This book helps explain how any parish can live out Pope Francis' dream for the Church which has become turned in on herself. "I dream of a “missionary option”, that is, a missionary impulse capable of transforming everything, so that the Church's customs, ways of doing things, times and schedules, language and structures can be suitably channeled for the evangelization of today’s world rather than for her self-preservation." (Evangelli Gauduim, no. 27)I'm a pastor and have been a priest for 10 years. This book was absolutely inspiring. Why were we not talking about these things in the seminary?I have a few lay people reading the book and they are beginning to see the vision and have found it to be an amazing, fascinating read. Recommended for anyone discontent with the lack of intentional disciples in their parish.

“Divine Renovation: Bringing your parish from maintenance to mission” by Father James Mallon is a multifaceted, multileveled book written for those intentionally willing to invest in Christ and His Church. The purpose of this investment is to refocus and create a dynamic Church that will be vibrant and Christ filled for the following generations including my sons, their wives and my grandchildren and really all people of God!This book is written by Father Mallon who is pastor of Saint Benedict Parish in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada for the purpose of parish renewal and evangelization. It has a discussion guide written by the folks at the Archdiocese of Chicago as well as our Cardinal Blasé Cupich. In the workbook the Cardinal states: “..our aim is to make disciples, build communities and inspire witness.. that we take up this venture together, ever relying on the guidance of Christ.”Each of the seven chapters have such meaningful words that people see as part of their everyday life work. As a person who has recently taken up some activities that assist the strength of my body, the strength and health of my relationship with Christ is one hundred times more important. Walking through the gym, one sees as many as 250 people ‘working out’. We need to put that same energy into the work of our discipleship, where we get people invited to be with Christ and His community. As Pope Francis says in Evangelii Gaudium “I am a mission on this earth: that is the reason why I am here in this world.” Mallon in Chapter one says: “we have forgotten who we are and what we are called to do as a Church’. Mallon further states: “It is said that it is not so much that the Church of Christ has a mission, as that the mission of Jesus Christ has a Church.” Mallon finishes the chapter by relating the work in his parish: “Since 2014, we have seen almost 2,000 people participate in Alpha, with 20% to 30% being non-churchgoers….we have seen hundreds of lives changed and transformed as people encountered the person of Jesus Christ, in the power of the Holy Spirit.”In Chapter two, Mallon outlines the work of specific Popes and tells us that the second Vatican Council points out that: “Holiness and mission are not new in the teaching of the Church, but the stress on the Universal nature on these things was relatively new. The idea that the call to holiness and mission is rooted not in ordination or in religious profession but in baptism has been so forgotten that it was revolutionary.” In explaining Aparecida Mallon states that “ …in Latin America is a profound commitment to authentic renewal and a clear grasp of what is truly at stake. The Aparecida document is the document of the Magisterium of the Church. Although it is a call t action for the Church in South America, it would be a real mistake to ignore its importance for the universal Church and not only because the man who would become Pope Francis had strong hand in shaping it.” The author then proceeds to let us know the importance of Aparecida to every person’s life.In Chapter three, Father Mallon, helps us to understand the sins of the universal Church. “Among the many tasks of the shepherd is that of keeping watch and warning the sheep of approaching dangers. We shepherds need to acknowledge our failure to recognize the signs of the times and to sound the alarm, even at the risk of disturbing the peace. We shepherds were supposed to be keeping watch, giving warning of the approach of an enemy and calling for urgent preparation but the clergy has failed and this is painful.” I would say, this is what seemed to be important to me in this chapter, so much of what is written is important as our own context becomes clear.In Chapter four, Mallon lays out the issues that need to be removed in order for growth to occur. At the end of the chapter he states:” Now that we have looked with honesty at the acute need for renewal in our church, and have cleared the floor of the junk that hinders our ability to truly receive and live the Gospel, we begin to lay a foundation and prepare a welcoming and warm home.”In Chapter 5, Father Mallon gives insight into how to transform the culture of the Parish community. Here he probes into the issue of culture, values, our common values and the expression of our values to each other and the larger community. Mallon then gives attention to giving priority to the weekend. At a recent meeting of lay leadership, I suggested we read the Gospel of the day and then talk about it for 15 minutes. There was little support to do this as an hour meeting is all we could ask of others? I was somewhat stunned but the fact that we would lengthen the meeting held as something we were not willing to do. Father Mallon states that we should look at the Eucharist as the most important thing we could take part in on any Sunday. Maybe we should change the Mass times and make the celebration of Mass all day on Sunday even if I have to attend the 3:15 Mass! The author also believes that the celebration of the homily should be our time of intently listening to the Scriptures. The preaching needs to be on what was proclaimed –the Scriptures! There are so many important aspects to this chapter it needs to be read.The main focus of Chapter 6 is the sacraments, as our greatest pastoral opportunity. Mallon describes new models of pastoral care. The most important program to me in my parish is RCIA or adult Baptism. Our time and resources should be spent on the sacraments. We need to make all preparation family based so that in preparing for first Communion the entire family would take part in the catechesis. The reception of the sacraments need not be regulated to certain times in people’s lives or their ages but rather their preparation and understanding of what it means to be a disciple of Christ at this time.In Chapter 7, Mallon discusses the essential role of leadership. Father Mallon has stated that “The primary role of the leader of any organization is to develop and communicate a vision for what can be. “Hybels defines vision as a picture of the future that produces passion in us.” In defining charisms, he points out that vision may begin with the leader but it cannot remain solely in the mind and heart of the leader. It must be communicated and shared in a compelling way that invites others to receive it, take ownership of it and even change and adjust it. Father Mallon continues by defining the aspects of a strategic plan and how they are locked into the vision in a symbiotic manner.In the conclusion, Father Mallon quotes Rick Warren in which he states: “God has used me to do great things, because I expected him to do so.” Jesus promised that we would receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon us.Reading this book and its accompanying workbook brings us the grace and blessings to do God’s work of discipleship here on earth. What I wrote is just a smattering of the wonderful ideas of Catholicism that he relates. Put all other books down and read this one. It is that affirming of Christ and His Church.

Even as I perceive our culture collapsing on so many facets --- and knowing not what to do except to pray --- Pastor James Mallon saw his newly-assigned parish as being confused about even the most basic purpose of a church building: “We don’t need to know about Jesus; what we need is cards!” This book is the story of how Fr. Mallon confronted the collapsing Catholic Church culture and, sometimes by trial and error, persisted to build a parish focused on Jesus’ missionary message: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations … teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you” (Mt 28:19-20). Focusing his successes, this book is a how-to manual for changing your dying parish into the lively, loving community it was meant to be.In his new parish, Fr. Mallon initially saw parents come to have their babies baptized, and never come back. He saw teens receive Confirmation --- on their last-ever visit to a church. And he saw the weekly rush out the door before his Sunday masses even ended --- and he resolved to change this culture in his parish. And remarkably, to a large degree he did.Reading this review I know you are thinking right now: “Man, what a lot of work!” No, what a lot of fun! Fr. Mallon found that his parishioners yearned to have a relationship with Jesus, and with their neighbors. They didn’t want to come to a one-hour mass with strangers; they wanted to meet and worship and do things with friends and neighbors. And once they learned (or remembered) how much they enjoyed making new friends, their life became more full, with their new-found family.You and your pastor need to read this book, and begin making changes in your parish. Now!I know of this book and this program because I am seeing these changes beginning in my own parish, and I am excited.
